Re: I think we settled on a Gemini, change my mind

We’ve owned two Geminis a 3000 and a 3400.
We sailed the 3000 across the Okeechobee from ft Meyer to Up Jacksonville.
From Ft Lauderdale thru the Bahamas including the outer islands to the Turks & Caicos.
Our 3400 from Elbow Key Abacos to Ft Pierce Florida. We love our Geminis only drawback is you have to sail to weather and sit out the bad stuff.
It’s been great island hopping as we can sit in 18 inches with dagger boards up.
We’ve seen some really amazing things in the shallow side of the Exumas.
Wouldn’t take one across the Atlantic but we are taking our 3400 to Puerto Rico this spring and island hopping down the chain

Pretty sure the Gemini 105mc is CE certified A, but to be honest, I wouldn’t put much emphasis on the CE certificate if I was shopping for a cat.

smj, hi again, u were helping me with my other question.
if 105mc is CE A, I assume legacy 35 is as well. but i have big doubts. i personally put a lot of emphasis on the CE cert details, and it will influence my decision making with my future purchase.

The Legacy 35 is a different design built by a different company than the 105mc, so not sure if they went through the process of a CE certification.
I personally don’t consider the Gemini 105MC to be a great choice for water sailing">blue water sailing so to me the fact it’s CE certified A makes me wonder...........

Thats just my personal opinion. And honestly going back to your Gemini/Seawind thread, you can’t go wrong with a Seawind......of course just my personal opinion again. [emoji16]

Agreed. Seawind is clear winner compared to gemini.
i'm new to this, so my mind is all over the place. Still learning... as a first sailboat i'm starting to consider catalina 315... What do you think?

Gemini 105MC 2003 was certified CE A till about 2010,
Non of the other Gemini's were certified for any thing,

I bought mine in Fiji after it sailed all over the Pacific, Including to Australia,
I sailed it home to Australia,

It now Lives next to Bass Strait in Victoria, Australia,
Ive had it out in well over 40 Knots and huge seas and it handled it easily,

You’ve mentioned your 40+ knots in Bass Strait many times. Usually you also talk about how the boat spun around 360 degrees and that you ran your engine to go downwind and keep control. Didn’t sound like ‘handling it easily’.

Also, no disrespect to your experiences, but your own words describe your boat as great downwind and not in any direction forward of the beam in anything but flat conditions. That does not sound to me like a good boat for offshore cruising.

Your use case of waiting for downwind forecasts to sail is totally fine for you, but it is not generally applicable.

That particular storm you quoted, I was heading for Westernport Bay, I didnt have a centreboard down to keep me straight, I had forgotten about them,
8 years since I last sailed it, It was a shake down cruise to find out if any thing wasnt up to scratch,
It was spinning at 90 and 180 degrees, Not 360,
I dont know what way the waves or wind was blowing, It was midnight, I couldnt see anything outside,
It was very dark and the wind was screaming,
I was in very big waves too, No, I dont know how high they were,
I was going East on the GPS and the light house light to keep me straight,
I was also steering by hand as the Autoplilot belt had broken,
It was a very violent night, My boat got hammered,

And Yes, My Boat handled it easy, Its also a full on Cork, It bounces on the Ocean,
I pull two feet of draught, It Goes across the Ocean, Not thru it,

On other trips in 3 metre waves following in Bass Strait, It was a very Cruisy and comfortable ride, Going down wind,

I took my new girl out for Her first boat trip ever in Westernport Bay in predicted 40 knot winds to see if she liked boats,
She loved it,

I dont take my boat out under 20 knots, Its a sail boat and I like high winds to make it go,

Its personal preference to not go upwind in my boat, Upwind is very slow and batters my boat, And I dont like it slamming under the bridgedeck,

I run my engine if there is no wind, The Genoa hangs on the mast like a dead sock,
Which happens a lot on Bass Strait, No wind,

How many times on here do you hear people say, Wait for a good weather window,
That to me means waiting for favorable winds, Down wind is favorable to me,

But when your out in it, You take it as it comes,
Lots of open ocean, You run down wind before it, Its common sense, Why batter your boat if there is no need too,

I sail my Gemini to windward whenever necessary.......... It does quite well. With my A spinnaker set-up, I can even get her to go uphill very nicely in light winds.

What does "offshore cruising" mean?? Crossing oceans?? Doesn't that mostly involve trade winds?? You know....... downwind.......

I had a Gem 105M for couple years. It is a lot in a small package. I just couldnt get over the feel of flimsyness. Plus the high noise level the hulls make with small waves even at the dock. I went back to mono with a Beneteau 41S5 which is very strong and great upwind..

Is this the same Gem you bought last January?

This is one negative to the boat that I have to agree with..........

The small horizontal extensions in the inner hulls add quite a bit of noise. However, this is a feature that many multihulls in this size range have.......

If, I ever buy another cat, it won't have this design.....
