Lee clothes - attached to hard bunks to prevent racing crews waking up when they are off shift.
It wasn't me fell out of bed on the Catalac though I did do the English part of that trip.

I've had to sell my cat and I'm finalising on a Jaguar 22 (I may have to rename it 'Arfur') at a tenth of the cost. Sailing has always been tugging at me, it's just much harder to do in a wibbly wobbly boat that can't make up it's mind where the horiaons supposed to be.

You're not 'jumping ship', you're just getting enlightened.

(Enlightened and a half with a tri)

So Saucy, Is the cat deal dead? Do you have any photos or info like price, damage, or specs on that cat. I just wondered what a grounded then repaired Catana would look like and the value that one would place on it. BOB

Re: Jumping Ship: From a Mono to a Cat

I would agree. I have sailed cat around the Pacific and it was great.
I'm a performance skipper on a 40' Tri and my preference is to sail a 45' + mono.
I very much prefer the mono experience because of the pleasurable "feeling" I get from sailing - i.e. the direct experience of the connection between wind and vessel momentum. I find cats are disengaged with this - whilst they offer apartment style accommodation, snug anchorage potential and flatish, though hobby horse ride, - they simply remove me from sailing; the human connection with the ocean. Of course there are many advantages for both and as you reference, I don't want to wage the old cat V mono war.

G'day Sandy0101, welcome aboard CF and I hope you enjoy your time aboard!
Interesting first post on a very old thread but your input is welcomed regardless!

And yet: 7 year old thread resurrected to tell us you prefer a mono?

Aww, come on Stu! It's his first post, and lots of folks, old hands included, miss looking at the dates of previous posts. It didn't strike me as trollish at all, just one more opinion expressed, and just as valid as the hundreds that have preceded it~!

Jim

PS Welcome aboard, Sandy

Re: Jumping Ship - From a Mono to a Cat

Thank you kindly. I’m not easily offended and I appreciate your welcome thank you.
I’m a she but ofcourse it’s easy to be identified as a he given male domination of skippers.
I’m no feminist either.
Would love to hear feedback on sailors’ feelings about mono / multi sailing from the perspective I described.
I’d like to add that many large cats have the skipper station often in isolation on the top of a cabin &/or single captain’s chair. I find that a design oddity.

Re: Jumping Ship - From a Mono to a Cat

Hi, Sandy, I'm Jim Cate's wife, and I wanted to say welcome aboard, too.

Also, we have a friend who has a lagoon, with the flying bridge, who has sailed quite a few miles on it, and he loves it. I am more on your side, that it separates one from the water. And I agree also, that the way monos respond to wind and waves, it seems to involve one more, on a physical level. But, like you, I am not a catamaran sailor, and most of them I've met love their cats, like we do our monos. We're all different, and certain motions bother some more than others. There are people out there who do not feel that heeling the boat has anything at all to do with harmony of ocean, wind, and waves, and sail trim. And, in all honesty, there have been times I didn't much care for it, my own self. Usually, in fine weather, it is beautiful.

Ann

OOps! Sorry 'bout that Ms Sandy... how's a fellow to know?

One of the cats we've (briefly) sailed in was an Atlantic 42 which sports a forward cockpit and helm. This design seems to be a bit controversial, but it seemed to me to be more "connected" to the sea and environment than conventional aft cockpit cats, and especially the flying bridge types. I kinda liked it, but it was a fair weather sail and I'm a bit leary of what it would be like going to windward in a blow.

Lots of things to consider, but I'm still happy with our mono when sailing. It's hard to be critical of cats when sundowners are happening, though!

Re: Jumping Ship - From a Mono to a Cat

I understand you are new to the forum so couldn't have known, but this topic has been beaten to death lately. Probably worth taking a look back through some of the recent threads on this. My last post on the perennial mono v multi sailing ability topic was this one:
