I have done promo photo shoots like that on mega sail yachts. 10 crew work to get the spinnaker up and then the photographer sends everyone below for the money shot.

My understanding from the details-lacking YouTube video is that they hit a reef in the middle of the channel. Sounds like they drew the lucky number at new reef detection to me.

Based on the video, it appears they hit a reef just north of the channel. The Navionics and C Map charts show no detail in this area. The satellite imagery clearly shows the reef, although without any depth infomation. Sad to see the demise of such a magnificent vessel. Glad no one was hurt.

The video shows the salvage boat leaving after dark. It sounds to me like the boat captain violated a cardinal rule of reef navigation--only move around reefs when the sun is overhead with a person up in the rigging. The only thing I would trust around a reef after the sun is down is my previous track, and then only then in emergencies.
