Lagoon Sail Drive Placment

Which Lagoons have their Sail Drive Aft of the Rudder? Just Noticed this on the Lagoon 420, which Appears to have this set up. Why would they do this?

440 as well, ergonomics, it frees up space and noise in the accommodation.

the set up works quite well as long as you remember to lock the steering central when going in reverse, otherwise the propwash whacks the rudders hardover

steering in reverse is achieved by engine differential.

Re: Lagoon Sail Drive Placment

I believe all the new lagoons and FP's are built this way.

It's not a monohull that needs the prop wash across the rudder to maintain control at the dock. You'll use the two throttles for that, and only use the rudder occasionally to slip the stern sideways.

PITA when backing. On the Lagoons Ive run the wheel brake wont hold it. So you or a crew member must also hold the wheel.

Same on the FPs and they don't have wheel locks (at least those I've been aboard.) You quickly get used to it.

Our L400. Never thought of sailing backwards without wheel in hand so never checked whether wheel-lock can handle the issue.

Close quarters maneuvering under power normally you lock the wheel and just use motors. As a charter captain, I do this a lot jockeying boats around.

On aft propped boats, especially bigger ones w more HP, the wheel can be quite hard to hold. I usually lock it and jam my hip or knee against it.

We are sailing a Lagoon 380 build 2007. The SD are behind the rudder, too. Totally agree with belizesailor regarding going backwarda. Never use the steering wheel when space for manoeuvering is tight.

Re: Lagoon Sail Drive Placment

Not sure the backing issue has much to do with the rudders before or after the Saildrive.

Re: Lagoon Sail Drive Placment

An optimistic design. Works well until both engines are in good working order and no breakdown arise. May be ok for cats sailing where mecanics are easy to find but let to ask if serious sailing in exotic areas is planned.

I know the pros but cannot forget the cons.

Good luck

Re: Lagoon Sail Drive Placment

Quote "Why would they do this?" Because they can.

It is a total none issue as far as maneuvering under power or sail. If your prop is in front of your rudder when going forward, it will be behind it when in reverse, and visa versa for the opposite setup. Some catamarans with outboards have them offset from the line of the rudders and they still manage to maneuver very well, even though the prop wash is not being directed directly over the rudder in either direction.

This setup also allows the engine and sail drive to be placed aft of the accommodation area behind a (hopefully watertight) bulkhead. Keeping the heat and engine smell out of the living area to a much greater degree than if said engine is under a sheet of marine ply beneath the mattress.

I guess if "real sailors" see this as a big disadvantage, it would be easy enough to spill some diesel on the sheets and sleep with a heater on to get that old school experience.

Re: Lagoon Sail Drive Placment

I don't think it's a matter of "real sailors" more the matter of advantages and disadvantages, and to ad weight to the ends of a catamaran is a disadvantage. Also with the props forward of the rudders you don't have to maintain the death grip on the wheel. You do gain more interior space with the engines aft if that's a priority. It's all a trade of one way or the other.
