True. But that comes after all the heavy bonding, and earthing, and generally removing high current exposure at the racks. The mov, GDT, fast diodes, etc deal with the hopefully, 1% of the remainder.

Good point. I figured that part was obvious, but indeed proper grounding is probably the most overlooked / ignored aspect of protection even in telecom.

Google Motorola 68P81089E50 for quite a load of telecom install procedures. With a lot on lightning protection.
