There is no reasonable excuse for shouting: it is offensive, ill mannered, immature, and bothers others. Hearing aids if it is a deafness issue, and walkie-talkies will help that, too, for maneuvering.

Bravo.

In fact I am really trying to get my teenage daughter to do the mooring, unless conditions are tough in which case I prefer to do the damage should it happen rather than get her to feel bad. She has picked up some of the tricks which she has condensed into: go slow and take your time. It's all very elegant. And we agree afterwards if no-one got hurt and there was no damage, it was a good result. Even if someone's ego might disagree (and often it is the ego which demands the screaming).

using headsets on our 38' monohull. We use headsets in crowded anchorages, or docking. Don't use them for moorings much. It reduces stress a LOT. No more screaming WHAT ? WHAT? etc.. Also use them for going up the mast.

I lower the anchor (human windlass) , it is much better for the wife to listen to me talk directly to her instead of screaming when it is windy or noisy (engine). She has a hard time with hand signals.

Being able to say, calmly, what I want/need, without additional stress, goes a long way.

Being able to tell her faster, slower, neutral, reverse etc... ask what the depth is, and such really helps reduce stress.

we use the single ear Eartec . always keep a set of batteries charged!

Dunno about all that with Eartecs, though.

one of the things we like about the eartech is that it covers one ear only, leaving the other to listen for ambient or outside noises, hails etc

which ear is selective so in my owners case she puts it over her hard of hearing ear (and turns the volume up) leaving the good ear free

cheers,

Re: Marriage Savers - do you use them?

YES and I couldn’t care less what others think about us using them. It makes life easier and communicating clear.

We also use them when hoisting the head sails, dive tanks or whatever out of the bow lockers. Im down the ladder and she is at the helm on the winch and I can ask for lift or slack to get things out stress free.

Also great for when someone is up the mast or in the engine compartments and needs input from the helm.

Can communication be done other ways for free. Sure, but not nearly as effective.

We use them quite a bit. My wife is short, under 5' and I loose here when she is up front sometimes. Way easier for us to talk at a normal level to each other.

We use the Sena Expand Bluetooth headsets. These ones claim to be water resistant and you can wear them with a hat on.

Huge improvement after twenty years of shouting and screaming !

Re: Marriage Savers - do you use them?

We have a pair that we use when anchoring and if working on the bow trying to resolve a problem. The Eartec have worked perfectly. We always remove the batteries between use. Charge after 3-5 uses.
The sensitivity of the microphone is such that we can hear each other breath.

Not only do I use them with my wife, but my offshore crew loves them.

Hand signals fail when the crew member needs both hands to do a job. Eartec solve this problem

We use for docking and anchoring our Android smartphones via wifi, Plantronics V5200 bluetooth headsets and the app "Talkie Wi-Fi Calling".

Re: Marriage Savers - do you use them?

We love using them. The moniker is unfortunate. I would call them Life Savers. My wife and I have been sailing together for 38 years. We have Bluetooth SENA headsets and use them for docking, anchoring, hoisting the spinnaker or just climbing the mast. In many situations, my hands are busy, so using hand signs is problematic. We can even talk to each other if one of us has to go below. Well worth it. Sure, you still need planning, but these are great.

Re: Marriage Savers - do you use them?

Where we are a Monohull and not a Cat; We do find the use of head sets for communication while docking, leaving dock and especially setting and/or lifting anchor, to be of very high importance in order for correct communications to happen. The distance from the Foredeck to the Cockpit is too great to rely only on raised voices, and indeed shouting. The use of Hand Signals is (only sometimes) but usually not at all practical. Headsets are often also used when one of us is at Helm, while the other is below decks.
