Metric Chain In Panama, Where To Buy

Hi all! I need to replace my 10 mm chain. Anybody knows where to find it or where to order it from?
Thanx!

YesISail,

Be sure to take your gypsy with you and try the chain in it when you go. I was amazed the time we went to a windlass company here, and they had 15 or so ever so slightly different sized 10 mm chain. One would expect it to be standard, but just check. That can save you having the chain jump out of the gypsy under use, a really bad deal, IMO.

Tried taking out the gipsy but a screw broke and has bad corrosion around. So oli dont want to risk it. Maybe a part of the windlass might break and i dont want to risk it.

Measure a good link with calipers and hire a taxi driver who knows boats and go shopping. There might be everything in Panama City.

I found bugger-all in Panama.

Theres about 3 chandlers and they only deal with fishing boats. I dont think they have ever seen a sail boat.

I try to tell everyone to fully kit out before getting to Panama.

I know this Jewish guy who knows this guy who has a store in the free zone in Colon, he can get anything.
Maybe you missed it but there is a shop out on the causeway now too, and they are surrounded by sailboats and powerboats, all with anchors and chain.

Re: Metric Chain In Panama, Where To Buy

For chain of known good quality & type may be best to order from Marine Warehouse. Low shipping costs and 1% Customs duty.

From Panama City Cruisers Guide:

" See Abernathy's, Casa Mar or Pesqueros (under“Chandlery”) Acco chain must be shipped in from the U.S. For this service, see Marine Warehouse or Gente de Mar..."

Agree Marine waqehouse and shipping in may be your best bet.

If it helps, we had 10mm European chain and we have a Lofrens windlass, we replaced the 10mm chain with 3/8 hi test as the gypsy is the same for both sizes

Captain Jack (the hostel, owner Jack) in Portobello can get you metric chain. Know another boat who got it from there. Not cheap though...
