I was inside doing some work on the computer in the afternoon...suddenly the cabin got darker...looked out the window and all you could see was a wall of white about 15' away. Went on the back deck and they were towing a 200' monster by our little 34' cat.

I'm OK with people spending far too much on new boats...means a few years down the road, I can get one for a fraction of the price (not that we are going to get a 200' megayacht).

But to the original point, I think it's two groups:
- People with $5-10million (or more), they can afford a boat that expensive if they want it. There are more of these people than you would think.
- People living beyond their means...works for a while until something goes wrong...like a market downturn or getting laid off.

Million dollar catamarans

1 Mil is nothing, that’s poor people’s boats.
The Mega’s I see all of the time are of course professionally crewed, by a large crew, and more often than not seem to do passages without the owner, who flies in on the Private Jet when the Yacht is at its destination.

Even much smaller boats can cost huge amounts of money, I met a nice couple on a 65’ Viking Sportfishermen in the Dry Tortugas, helped them with an electrical problem, or actually the Professional Capt.
In talking to him I asked what the cruise speed and fuel burn was, I think it was about 24 kts, but definitely remember it was 120 gl an hour.
I remember this as it’s four times as fast as my boat, but burns 120 times the fuel.
120 times the fuel, that just left me dumbstruck at the waste.

Your Million dollar Cat that the owners need 50 hours instruction is a poor persons boat, all “real” Yachts are Professionally crewed, people with money don’t clean up after themselves, and certainly never do manual labor, like sailing. They have people for that.

Million dollar catamarans

Saw this thing in Georgetown the other day, the owner sort of interrupted the net to explain it to everyone, he called it an “adventure Yacht” pure carbon fiber.
What’s the point?

Re: Million dollar catamarans

I can afford to sail my 34 foot Cat on my own, Its very cheap to run,
I couldnt afford the 10 crew members they need to drive their Mega Yachts let alone the boat under them,

A million dollars is a one with six noughts beside it,

I have never had any trouble talking to the people on Mega Yachts, They are just people like you and me,
They have a bigger boat than me, Big deal, But we do both have boats, So we have common ground to Chat about,

My 34 foot Cat would be very expensive to a lot of people too, And a lot bigger as well,
So its all relative,

We spent some time anchored next to Adastra in Falmouth Hbr two years ago. Adastra. She's is one beautiful boat. At around 140' and $30 million if I remember correctly, she takes the power trimaran concept to another level. If the owner has the money to try something new/interesting, why not?

Cheers,

Re: Million dollar catamarans

There is a difference between a boat and a yacht.

A boat is where the owner works on it........

A yacht is where someone else works on it...........

True story.

One fellow on here was making a political comment about the "elites" and his boat was worth $250K to $400K easily. I mentioned that his boat would make him seem like an elite to most people and he was offended by that. But I guess there are elites and then there are ELITES like the ones that own the really big boats. I strive to be the little elite... baby steps, you know.

From a previous life: 40-50kn and 4000L (yes, over 1000 US gallons) - per hour...

Re: Million dollar catamarans

Like everyone has said, it's all relative.

I love seeing large beautiful boats. Small ones too.

I can't even imagine the zeros that go through the owner's bank account.

There is a very large gap from paying multiple full time crew and doing almost everything yourself.

Re: Million dollar catamarans

I actually think that if someone wanted to retire and liveaboard a cat (ie. sell the house), $1M is actually not that far fetched even for middle class lifestyle.

Its true that a $1M house will appreciate and a $1M boat will depreciate, but you can't sail your house

(Yes, this is more or less my plan in the next 5-7 years or so )

Re: Million dollar catamarans

At the Toronto Boat Show the wife and I toured $million Sail Boats as you do but walked off quite a few we did NOT like at all. We couldn'y say the same about the Power Boats we could have bought anyone of them.

Slight flaw is not having the $$$"s to accomplish that.

I don't know if the sailboats were catamarans, but I do think there is a huge premium being charged for the new generation cats. Supply and demand.

Re: Million dollar catamarans

I'm kind of right there with you - I used the word "sail" but I probably mean using an Iron Genny But there are definitely nice powercats from FP, Aquila, Leopard, Endeavour, etc that are floating around this pricepoint in the 43'-50' size.

Toronto Boat Show never showcases Catamarans as far as I've ever attended. Too hard to get a Cat into the showroom in January I suppose!

Re: Million dollar catamarans

It’s foolish to do two things.
1. Buy new, as the initial depreciation is horrendous
2. Buy whatever it is that is in style, because your paying a whole lot to be stylish. However I concede that must be very important to some, so I guess it’s worth it to them.

Re: Million dollar catamarans

Counterpoint:

1) Yes - if you can find a used one. Its pretty rarefied air for these boats in North America I find.
2) For a liveaboard, style is not unimportant
