Talking Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

From the pics looks like I stole your idea for mast-moving, Alex!

Used the trailer off my 15ft half-cab with temporary crutches mounted fore and aft to carry the mast, with overhang of about 2m at rear and 1.2m over tow vehicle (max. allowed under NSW Law!!). Sorry, forgot to take pics.

But mine was only 8m long, off a Farrier 680, 26ft not 40ft..!

You must have used a looooong trailer...??

Lovin' your work, btw....

I then had to lengthen the trailer to carry the free 24ft tri I scored off eBay. Weighed the trailer and 'guesstimated' the weight of the hulls and reckon I was 'just' over my OEM trailer towing mass, but still under the legal 75o-kg unbraked tow limit at around 600kg-ish. trailer was under 200, so guessing 4-500 for the boat, barehulls....

It's hard to see but I've added 1.2m to the rear of the trailer and slid the axle forward 500mm - it's adjustable!

Gotta love eBay.

nice job,i was looking at corsairs and farrier tri's as I had located a mast off a F11c farrier(38ft)tri ? before I found this this one, that was a bigger section from a first45.

looks like the builder did a good job on the hulls of your speed machine, she looks more or less ready for paint, and bolt on fittings

the trailer I used is from a "pilot racing gig club" that I borrowed for a week, single axel and 9m long so only 1.5 m over hang at each end.

as the trailer was a "borrow" the supports for the mast all had to be bolt on and be removable, so I used scaffolding tube and clamps for the back 2 mounts, and 8cm box for the front.

it was interesting driving round in Southampton rush hour traffic,to say the least!,but towed like a dream once on the motorway.

I hope you post some photos of your fit out, looks like a nice project
thanks for sharing

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

I notice from the pictures you have the footpedal for the Sillette drive leg - did you install that or did it come with the hull?
I'm asking because I need to replace ours, but it seems like prout used to use the UD617 from teleflex, but the UD617 has changed from a 3/8" UNF to 5/16" which is not strong enough for the sonic steering according to Sillette - thoughts?

hi geoffr,i'm not sure what you are referring to?

the drive leg I have used was one I bought off ebay for £100,and is not the extended version, just the standard mk1 type 100 with 2:1 reduction and gearbox built in.

if you are referring to the steering,at the moment the yoke is locked on mine as this was quite worn when I bought it,so unable to steer with the leg.

as i have been also installing the wheel steering on the boat,i have done quite a bit of research on Teleflex systems,so if I can be of any help let me know.

I seems like the discontinued cables are still available here in the uk,but part numbers have been changed.

cheers atoll

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

Just had to replace my cable and got one from Cabletec on eBay for £65 for a 4.5m cable (on my 35 Snowgoose) - fitted straight in to the steering fitting from Sillette though I must confess I didn't check which it was 3/8 or 5/16 but it went straight on and was identical to the original one that came off after 30 years...
