Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

Morning cruisers,Happy Easter,i hope the easter bunny satisfied your cravings for chocolate and may the, type 2 diabetes be slow to manifest with maturity, poor diet and lack of exercise............

so far the the 24v system is working well, allowing use of the inverter for the 240v power tools.
the boats a/c system is now hooked up to the breaker panel, and all sockets are live

most of the ceiling panels are up in the saloon, and all of the hatch trims have been fabricated.
i will use lightweight rosewood trim to finish the ceilings once all the side windows are done.

i'm still waiting on 3 small deck hatches from Gebo to come from holland, over 2 months wait now, which is holding up putting in the ceilings in the heads, galley and stb fwd cabin.

12v system is on hold for a bit as i am waiting for a Nasa battery monitor and need to buy the light fittings.

a few photos,of the boat and some of the moldings i made for the deck hatches interior trim

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

Interesting, why have a 24v system and a 12v circuit?

Pete

i have quite a lot of brand new stuff from my other boat that is 24v,plus it reduces wiring sizes to the watermaker, bow windlass ,auto pilot( and inter battery connections which due to layout and weight distribution in a 12v ,2 battery system would put bank # 2 about 4m from the engine and need heavier cables for engine start and charging.

i also like the idea of being able to trickle charge from the 24v bank to the 12v bank should they need it.

it also eliminates the need for a redundant battery bank in a 2 battery bank system.

the only draw back is the engine only has a 12v alternator, but i have a double pulley so might fit a 2nd 24v alternator if needed although the idea is not to need the engine at all for charging batteries.

ideally the whole system should be balanced using the 12v bank (225AH )2 x 6v T105 225Ah for all house systems, being charged by solar and wind gen(aprox 500w),with the 24v bank (220AH) 4x 110Ah AGM basically fully charged all the time, charged by the other 500w of solar.

any short fall in 12v capacity overnight can be topped up by the https://www.alfatronix.com/dc-dc-battery-chargers 6amp@24v charger producing upto 12A @ 12v aprox

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

Hello atoll
We have just purchased a Prout Snowgoose 37 elite. I was hoping to pick your brain a bit. We need to antifoul her before fetching her back up to Fleetwood. Could you tell me how much paint we would require??
Thanks

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

We have a Snowgoose 37 and are going in the yard next weekend to renew the antifouling. We are using Interlux Micron CSC, so an ablative paint. For a 2 1/2 coat system (2 full coats with a third at the wear areas). For this it takes 4 gallons. As your Elite has a little more underwater profile I would guess you would need 5 gallons for the same application schedule.

If you are in a rush, I would think 2 gallons would give you a good single coat.

also if it is very hot you will use more paint!

it is also a good idea to buy a tin of the special thinners for ablative antifouling(toluene)for cleaning and getting that last bit of paint out the tin.

between coats put your brushes and rollers in a bucket of water, this will preserve them for the next coat .

putting your roller tray in a plastic shopping bag before adding the paint saves on clean up between coats.

a broom handle extension will allow you to apply the the paint from a standing position for the most part rather than on your hands and knees!

some prouts had sacraficial wood on the under sides of the keels for boats in mud berths,so some epoxy filler might be useful for repairs.

some epoxy primer might also be needed in areas before applying anti fouling.

use blue or green masking tape if the tape is going to be on for more than a couple of days as it will come off without tearing along the paint line.

if you are going to clean and polish the topsides do this before taping off and antifouling.

bilge detergent, phospheric acid and acetone is best for cleaning the gelcoat.

water and 1200 grit sand paper can be used to remove scuff marks to the gelcoat, then polished with a fine polishing compound.

silicon polish once the hulls have been cleaned and prepared will bring back the shine

dont use a copper based antifouling on the sillette catamaran drive leg or sail drives, you need to use an antifouling specifically for aluminium.

i reccomend giving the drive leg a good inspection, clean, oil change and re-grease whilst out the water.
if there is water in the oil,ie the oil is emulsified.
the seals and anode behind the propellor will need changing.

parts can be had from here https://www.sillette.co.uk/

fast delivery in the uk,and very helpful tech guys if you need advice.

if you do need to drop the leg or drain the oil ,all the tools/allen keys are imperial size.
applying a bit of heat with a blow torch to the casing will help greatly when removing plugs and allen key grub screws.

I just did my 35. Smaller I know, but I bought 7.5l of Seajet and managed to do three coats, 4 in high fouling areas, and still probably had 2l left. Seajet Shogun has a spread of around 8m2 per litre.

that sounds about right! i think excaliber might have inadvertantly doubled the quantity needed.
i used 2 usa gallons-,8 liters for 2 coats of epoxy primer when i did the hulls, then about 2 uk gallons --9 liters for 2 coats of antifouling

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

a quick update on the build for those interested.

i now have all deck hatches fitted, after waiting 3 months for the 3 small hatches to come from Gebo in holland for the heads, fwd cabin and galley.
i also fitted hatches in the aft cabin ceilings, which are a great improvement for ventilation and light.

all the head liners are now fitted with the hatch combing inserts i moulded.
unfortunatly no photos as they were being held in place with clamps whilst the glue dried yesterday,so didn't take a photo.

12v d/c wiring loom and fuse panel fitted, ready for switch panels with isolator switches on the battery supply cables.
a separate 12v d/c 30A supply for the SSB in the nav station direct to the battery

wired up the heater fan controls , battery monitor for 12v and solar panel monitor for 24v at the nav station, still need to save up for the other 2 monitors but was able to do the cut outs in the panel.

wired up the 12v anchor windlass with up/down control solenoids, with controls at the bow and at the helm to lift and drop the anchor.

i did this using 2 twin pole solenoids, costing about £40 with the hand held control.
which saved a lot of money,as the Vetus black box which does the same polarity reversing function would have cost about £220 with the hand held control and helm control.

wiring diagram attached FYI for the solenoids

meanwhile,i just paid our mooring fees for the catamaran for the next year on the beach, which was £192......which has cleaned out the bank account again till the end of the month

I didn’t double it. I’d imagine the variance is due to the individual types of paint. This will be my first time doing the bottom on this boat but my quantity came directly from the previous owner and was verified by my paint store. Trust me, I’d be thrilled if it only takes 2 gallons. This antifouling is $250/gallon. [emoji44] I’ll know for sure on Monday.

please do let us know ,4 us gallons or 15.6 liters seems like a lot!
though i would expect it should get you at least 2-3 seasons in cold water

Next job we need a wheel. What diameter would you guys say looks right for the boat. I have a sea star 2 teleflex hub so I am thinking it’s a 3/4” taper. [ATTACH]Click image for larger version
