Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

a little bit more of todays bodging!

got the first coat of awlgrip hullguard D6070 on good stuff!,just over 1/2 gallon for the 2 hulls and nacell, should get buy with a gallon for 2 coats,so should have enough for 4 coats.

both aft cabins ready for laminating in the skeg reinforcements, and bulkheads tommorow.

set up a laminating station and plastic sheeting/vacume to contain fiberglass grinding dust and sticky stuff!.

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

The hatch location might actually be good if there is no hatch cutout yet. Nice flat are for mast base and blocks, etc. I don't think the bulkhead would be strong enough alone. I was suggesting a beam about 10" high and maybe 4" wide of 3 layers vertical ply with timber spacing. This would span the entire bridge deck and tie into knees attached to the inner hull side. Compression post from this up to the deck. My experience is prouts are pretty bendy and can only take a limited amount of rig tension on there fairly stumpy rigs. We tuned up a ?manta to a modest rig tension and the deadbolt would not lock on the main hatch when at rest.

A good beam would help that a lot and allow a somewhat more powerful rig. Anyhow, good luck.

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

an orgy of glassing over the last few days! hence no posts as collapsed into bed by 10 pm last few nights, but all the bulkheads, stations ,skegs and frames are glassed in or tabbed in place for removal later or permanent.

boat no longer wobbles!,interiour skeleton finished so now i can move onto getting the stearn drive in ,windows sealed, some electrics etc and go home!

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

anchor windlass and bow roller extention installed today, anchor chain and wharp ready for action!

faired off the sacraficial keels where they were sitting on the chocks fore and aft, will need a quick sand then both hulls can have the next few coats of awlgrip.

should fit stern drive tommorow,so more or less on target of 3 weeks from empty hull to ocean going cat!

Congratulations on one more trip around the sun.

Don't worry about the "life starts at 50" thing. That's a rumour started by "cube rats" that turn 50 and say "What the heck have I done with my life?!?". For them it's more like an upscale mid-life crisis.

On to more practical matters. Is that motor being mounted through the nacelle and the hatchway?

Sorry, but I live vicariously through your work. I do what I do and then see what you do and look down at my hands and say "What's with you guys?"

yes engine will be mounted in the existing engine room, was not sure till i measured and fitted the sterndrive, but should have at least 15 cm before the aft bulkhead, may fit the hatch as limejuicer suggested for better accses to the front end though, will have to cut down the molded in engine mounts, but no biggie,as hve to lower the engine about 10 cm to alighn the shaft to the flywheel plate.

thanks for birthday wishes......actually i feel about 55 at the moment! though boat yoga must be adding years to my life

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

I tried the boat yoga stuff. Just when I got my leg up in the tree pose on deck (without ripping the inner thigh skin off my base leg), a jet ski went racing by.

Let's just say the the great yogis of India didn't have to deal with dragging their soggy butts out of the water. If they did, yoga would be practiced with an AK-47 and there would be a whole new meaning to the warrior position.

Maybe a power cat would allow for more modernization in the design without the worries of the sails and the modified performance.
