Mooring Chafe on Vinyl Wrap

Hello all,
I was at Catalina Island (coast of Calif) on a friends Catamaran that has a Vinyl Wrap. Catalina requires that when you use a Mooring it must cleated it bow and stern - no exceptions.
We tied a line through the mooring loop at the stern and placed a towel under it to try and keep it from damaging the vinyl it still chafed and left some markings.
Any ideas how to keep the line from chafing the hull and wrap?

Re: Mooring Chafe on Vinyl Wrap

I'd figure out how to mount some kind of Stainless steel chafe guard to the hull. A "rub rail for ropes" kind of thing.

Some stainless tubing welded to a plate with end plugs or tapered ends in the tube ought to work. Your friend already knows how long they'd need to be and where to put them to stop the chafing.

The mooring line should just run across the tube like in the case of the towel, not through it. The tube just keeps the line off the hull, just like the towel should have. Size the tube and plate to ensure the line doesn't touch the hull from any reasonable angle.

Re: Mooring Chafe on Vinyl Wrap

Rob,
Thank you for your response and idea, but I can't quite picture what you are suggesting. We don't want to mount anything permanent of course. We do have NoWear stainless steel chafe guards at the top of the hull below the cleats and this gets the line over the edge of the wrap, it is below this - nearer the bottom of the hull that we get the rubbing.
Thanks
