Re: Need a cat, <$200K, 38-42ft, help

Thanks, it's true for me but your way ahead. I am a landlocked river sailor with short seasons on an '04 Hunter 216 day sailer on a mooring. I'll pursue a similar path in less than 3 years. For me, the cost for my River of Dreams experience has truly multiplied my quality of life and that's priceless.

Great website. One of my future pursuits will be spear fishing. I learned a ton from your blog.

Congrats,
I have a few questions since I'm also looking for a 380.

What sources did you use to locate this one? Panama doesn't seem to come up that often in YW for catamarans.

How was the marina and location. Were there many boats for sale there?

Excellent blog, btw.

You would think there should be some cats in Panama as its a global crossroads.

His 380 was listed on YW. In fact, here is the listing: 2000 Lagoon 380 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

Since you are looking for a 380 then I'm sure Caribbean dominates as there are so many coming out of charter. Not too many cat charters in Panama. But, they do come up. Here is a Lagoon 410 listed in Panama: 1997 Lagoon 410 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

Shelter Bay is a popular marina. It's also a great DIY yard as can be seen in many of these videos: WhiteSpotPirates - YouTube
You will also see quite a few catamarans in the marina. I don't see many "for sale" signs, though.

Panama is not the prime area of boating and boats there sell for less. Many issues such as location, language, access to surveyors etc contribute to the price pressure. You are right about the crossroads thing as most people pass thru and not many people stay.

I wasn't getting these notifications, sorry... Yeah, I found the boat on YachtWorld. There really are only a few places - YW, sailboatlistings, etc. that you can/should check on a regular basis. For me, a boat broker was helpful.

That particular Lagoon 410 didn't make it into my shortlist. High(ish) engine hours, older, and still pushing the boat with 28 HP engines. But - it has a ton of gear/spares aboard, meaning you won't have to spend as much outfitting it.

Glad you like the blog!

On the boat - as a couple of members here can attest, this boat wasn't my first option. I submitted other offers on other boats. We just stumbled across it on YacthWorld, and for the price, it was intriguing. It's far from perfect, but overall I'm satisfied.

The boat was located at Panamarina, but we sea-trialed it out of Shelter Bay. Panamarina isn't as much of a marina as it is a dock (apparently). Never been, but that's the impression we got.

Shelter Bay, though, is a great spot. I wouldn't hesitate even a minute to put a boat there (though I hear it's pricey). Of note, if you find something in Panama - it *needs* to be cheaper, significantly. The language barrier, lack of truly expert surveyors, etc translate into additional cost/risk for you.

Didn't see any "for sale" boats there, but the dominant dealer seems to be http://www.andromedayachtspma.com/ (the seller's broker on my boat). To be completely honest, they seemed a little aloof. But they weren't offensive, and they did agree to fix a small list of defects we found (at no cost to me).

I'd imagine, if you had deep pockets you could buy the attached boat. It's in Shelter Bay

Papers signed. Got insurance quotes, and getting the documentation done through ASAP documentation.

Official closing date is the 24th, but it depends on how fast they can get the parts and get them installed. I suspect it'll be the end of next week.

Then we confirm they've made the repairs, move some money, then I fly into San Blas for a few days on the boat with the seller.

Damn. I can't wait for that.
