What I don’t understand is how people say don’t buy a new boat. It looses value once you take ownership. From my research sailboats such as the one I own if less than three years old and in immaculate shape go for the same original selling price as new.

I do understand a five to ten year boat will have a significant price difference from when it was purchased new.

Lol.

You folks are nuts.

You come up with formulas divorced to the market, logic, and reality.

"Only buy a three year old 45 foot boat!"

Sure.

Reality is there are deals out there outside your paradigm.

The smart play is to look at the market, then maximize what you can get given what you have in your budget.

That is WHY I TALKED ABOUT MY BUDGET. It was a constraint, you cannot make a judgment without talking about what you have to spend.

But go with what ya want. Lol

They often say they lose one third right off the lot. I'm just saying I've never seen such advertised.

Here's one (not $3M and now $2.5M): https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/202...y-490-7996446/

A new one similarly spec'd will go for ~$635,000. They're asking $525,000. Not exactly 20%, but pretty close. A year ago the same model boat new was roughly $550,000. The owners of this boat probably bought her at around $550,000 and are now selling her for $525,000. Of course, the ~10% brokers commission hurts more than the depreciation.

Yes boats depreciate, and new boats especially. Inflation and irrational exuberance, at least right now, work against that depreciation a bit.

New boats don't go for MSRP.

They are loaded with overpriced options that jack the price up to as much as 50% over MSRP.

Don't know how you know what the new boat actually went for...... and just as importantly how much the brand new owner spent equipping it?

Re: New Boat vs Used Boat?

There was a mention of a big Privilege pages back. FWIW there was a big one >60 that partially sunk at a dock in Jamaica. Not a hurricane but a maintenance issue. And only a foot or 2 of water in the boat. Most of the boat still looked great but engines were probably toast plus other items. I think a brokerage company ended up purchasing it and somehow got it to Fla where it was restored and then resold. So if you are looking at a big P cat about 15 years old you might want to inquire about the history.

Interesting.

The one I looked at had the entire electrical system redone in 2015. The stated reason was to convert to US from European?

Your story makes sense... I have to wonder? Boat was gorgeous though.

Lol. My point was you all are complaining about there being no 2-3 year old gems out there. Well, that is what everyone is looking for, so duh.

Other boats are gems too, but since they fall outside the paradigm, they are available, and cheap in relative terms.
