Re: New Seawind 1170

It will be interesting to see the sailing numbers on this model. Looks a bit chunky in and above the water. Love the bowsprit and I pushed hard to get something similar when our boat was in production to no avail.
Move to Turkey is interesting. The charter market in the Med is a big one with Lagoon falling back a bit.

If you request the info pack they send you a sailing review by seawind themselves. The claim is 9-10 knots upwind in strong wind. But I think how it goes in light winds is the more interesting question. I have a feeling the Neel 43 will be better in lighter winds. Similar price point at least in Australia.

The sails are interesting on this boat. One self tacker on the stay, a screecher on the end of the longeron and an asymmetrical on the bow sprit. Seems like they are trying to make up for the weight and wetted surface with easily accessible light wind sails.

We have exactly this set up on our 1260. It works. Screecher is great in AWS up to around 16kts and can sail pretty close to the wind down to about 150 off it. The jib allows the boat to sail as close hauled as most cruising monos and well. The Assy speaks for itself. It’s a good sail plan.
Some 1260/1160 owners run a genoa but the sheeting angle is nowhere near as good as the jib and it is not nearly as effective as the screecher in light air.

Re: New Seawind 1170

Just noticed some small details that make me think this is still in beta..even a bit frankensteined.

1. The two pinned attachment for the Screecher. I guess it is to get the tack higher off the longeron but is this the most elegant solution? Maybe a dyneema setup like on the Neel 43 will be easier to service and provide more adjustment. If they really had to use metal maybe a custom titanium part would be better, lighter and much better fatigue characteristics. This might be because custom stainless work in Vietnam is cheap and easily accessible where as a dyneema setup will require imported parts.

2. The front of the saloon just looks half finished. Looks like they had to close the gap and just put some non matching white panels in there with the wood paneling from below just butting up against it. The 1370 on the other hand looks very polished and everything looks like it went through iterations .

3. The windows in front of the wheels looks like they are straight from the 1160 parts bin, including the storage. Nothing wrong with that but it makes me think there are better solutions coming. The Slant of the window doesnt even match the slant of the structure around it.

I was wondering why Tula's 1170 was done so quickly while Rube rose is still waiting for their 1370. This might be it.

Happy to see Tula's finally get their boat. It's been a long time coming.
Hi Matt,

If you click into the specification it says the 1170 has 0.7m of Bridge Deck Clearance. 0.73m for 1160 and 0.8m for 1260.

So they definitely reduced the Bridge deck Clearance over the 1260 and it's even a little less than the shorter LOA 1160.

I don't think they reduced bridge deck clearance. The hulls are immersed further due to weight- 9200kg vs 7000 for the 1160 Deluxe. I believe the head room gain was above the hull to deck joint to make a flatter sheer line. But it seems to sail well in their videos

I'm sure they have software to determined how far the hull sinks in the design stage. So whatever the clearance is now is 'designed' to be that way.

The manufacturers Clearance are as follows. Quite clearly the 1170 is lower than the 1160. And they wanted it to be that way. Assuming they follow the same criteria for measuring. But at least Seawind lists things like this, most dont. Some say the Nautitech 40 has 80cm but I cant find anything official.

Not saying it doesn't sail well. Just an interesting design decision.

I believe moving the production to Turkey is a smart move. They are now one of the biggest superyacht manufacturers - skilled boat builders and strong marine infrastructure. Izmir has well educated, young workforce, plus will be a great location in the long run.

I also wonder if 1170 and 1370 will be the only ones to stay. When I look at 1170 and its specs, it seems to me as if the boat was designed to take over the spots of both 1260 and 1160. I hope 1190 will still be around in case such a change happens.

Re: New Seawind 1170

Hello, I am a dealer for Seawind and I just had a build slot become available for an 1170. Delivery would be Q4 2024 if any of you are interested! I also have a 1260 slot. People talk about how far out Seawinds are sold, and that is true. But sometimes a buyer needs to pull out and sells their spot, as is the case here.

As far as we (dealers) know, we are not discontinueing any model because people do still desire the outboard option on 1160. Each model still has unique features that people want and we are building them years ahead, so those should be stable.
