It looks like an excellent product for commercial craft, and the lady in the video pretty much affirms that thought.
Definitely a move towards function vs form. I do wish the Bino system had a more attractive end cap. But as far as laying up against a concrete lock wall, they can't be beat. Rounded shape is much less likely to snag, and the rail will ultimately break away cleanly if it does snag before damaging the hull. A solid teak or fiberglass rubrail with SS wear strip is much more vulnerable, though a significant improvement over a simple thin plastic bead along the gunwale. But I agree, you have to be willing to live with the in-your-face appearance of a bold, fit-for-purpose rubrail. Speaks 100% utility which carries its own style of elegance that isn't for everyone.

I've tried rigging fender boards. I guess they're okay when the boat is already slipped and you have all the time in the world to tweak the lines. But digging them out of a lazarette and rigging them underway with the board and two fenders (four painters in all) is pretty distracting..

Sailingharry: what did you ultimately end up going with?

Re: No RUB Rails??

Peter,

The rubrail is from IntegrityMarine.Com. For 40 feet/side, it was about $1200 delivered, and weighs about 1.25 lb/ft, or about 100 pounds total. The plastic is model R1015, and I went with the 1" stainless rub strip. Note, the picture below of a sample shows a 1.25" stainless, a little larger but I didn't think it fit as well.

For us, the location was almost non-negotiable -- it had to be in the top foot or so, because below that there was core and I didn't want to compromise the core. There was also a 1.5" conduit running just above the core the entire lenghth of the boat, and then various vents and other obstructions. But the place we put it worked!

In a perfect world, the rubrail would be 1/2" thicker (out from hull) and 1 foot further down.
