You are talking about two different markets completely.

35-40 years ago or even 20 years ago only the very hardy would set out in a 30 footer for long passage. Now sailing is available to a much broader market courtesy of the fact that they can cruise in relative safety and comfort, and that broader market wants the extras. If the OP does not and he only wants speed then he should go for it. Otherwise, he would want to consider the impact of weight on the boat.

35-40 years ago the average world cruising boat was a mono between the size of 30-35'. I understand there is a broader market out there now where people can comfortably and safely cruise in a large catamaran and the broader market wants the extras. But are we doing anyone a favor saying they Can't cruise in or it's socially unacceptable to cruise on a cat like the Outremer 42? It is what you make of it and from my perspective of owning and cruising cats for 23 years I want the smallest simplest boat I can handle. No washers and dryers for me!

Mate no one said you can't cruise in an O42 or even that its socially unacceptable whatever that is. All I think any of us have said is basically the designed payload for that particular outremer is a little light on for long term cruising.

If weight is an issue on a boats performance then a watermaker is exactly what you want aboard.

Re: outremer 42

Spot on Tellie thats why i put one in. Next time ill listen to you and get a spectra though!

Those damn italians at Baitek dont know what customer service is

Reckon we save around 125 to 150 kg of weight on our boat net since putting it in.

Next is Lifepo4 batts for another 100kg, ally dink with 2 stroke for another 80 kg and we might get back to 3/4 wind speed again!
