Outremer 45 Danson vs New?

As sailboats (not apartments), what would be the most significant performance differences between the old and new Outremer 45? Anyone upgraded from one to the other?

The new one is more than 3 ft longer and nearly twice the weight(?) assuming data is consistent.

Yes, the data is strange. The official (?) displacement figures for the older 45 I've found are between 5t - 7.5t, but the one actual boat I've been looking at (on yachtworld) says 7t dry weight in the ad but 9.5t in the data I got from the broker

Yes, I remember speaking to an owner of an old 45 saying his was closer to 11t loaded. No idea how accurate this figure was or how he knew.

I know the really early models were lighter and suffered significant but non structural cracking around joins and hard points. Maybe the published figures were based on these boats and never got updated as the boats matured.

There is nothing more mystical than catamaran displacement figures.

I wonder if the new 45 length includes the bowsprit because I found other sites that say the hull length is 13.77 meters (45' 2"). On the other hand the 4X is an extended 45 which is 48'. Perhaps they make the O45 using the same molds as the 4X now. The 4X is their go fast $$$ version for the readers here that didn't know.

This ad says the owner had the factory extension done for his 45. I guess that was an option.

And here they say the 4X hulls are and extended 45.

It was an early option that I believe became standard after a few years. If you look at the 2014 for sale on Yachtworld, it's actually 45' and has the shorter stern section.

Re: Outremer 45 Danson vs New?

Thanks for the explanation Matt. The lengthening of the O45 might explain why the 49 evolved into the 51. Otherwise there would have been 2 boats available at 48' and then another at 49' and we can't have that.

The guy whio runs the slip travel-hoist can tell you what the vessel's weight is--which is equal to the actual displacement.

This might give you the relative difference between two boats lifted in the same yard but would not be very accurate at giving an actual weight. Travel lifts capable of lifting wide cats are typically 150 tonnes plus and the strain gauges are calibrated to prevent over loading including tackle and strops, 10 tonnes or there about will hardly register. It is not say you won't get an idea but it is unlikely to be very accurate.

We have to use the 300 ton lift in Port Townsend when we haul. We don't budge the gauge on the load cell. We have the plans for the boat and displacement is 18,500lbs at design waterline. That's about where we're sitting at the moment. The figure from the travellift is worthless.
