So what was their design intent from the factory? Sounds like you were thinking just along the same lines as i am, okay lock automatically which is good, but then did they intend that you open the hatches and unlock them by hand when retracting? And aren’t they way down in a hole?

Yes they originally did require that you opened the lid and reached down to release the lock. I doubt that many owners would have left it that way as it was less than ideal.

The older Gemini's actually had line from rudder to rotate the outboard with the rudder.

Interesting solution. Am I correct in assuming that the pod hinges at the front and the whole pod lowers with the outboard fixed in place?

The pod pivots from about 1/3 of the way back from the front of the pod. And yes, we usually leave the outboard fixed and just pivot the pod, but you can tilt the outboard slightly then pivot the pod to really tuck it up to the bridgedeck
