Re: Safe mooring and Multihulls - costs

moorings are the same, docking; if you are tasking up two slips they will charge accordingly but a finger or end slip is the same for all boats...up and down the US east coast

Agree. On east coast of US, moorings are the same price, mono or multi. They should be, they scribe the same circle of swing. Dock, slips are two times head in since you are taking two slips. But the same price for long dock or T dock.

Re: Safe mooring and Multihulls - costs

For my 38 ft Lagoon I pay for two slips in Urbanna, VA. But I have the whole U to myself and they don’t care if I keep my little Boston Whaler in there or when my friends from other marina’s come in with their dinghy’s and tie up in my slip.

I asked in my local marinas, south-coast uk -

they wouldn't entertain a lower price for an end tie..

(Logic was said to be that then everyone with a catamaran will ask for that arrangement..)

Cheers!
Probably the times at the moment. I have always managed to get better prices for alongside or end for our Cat (45') in Southampton area. Helps to bargain and hunt around but its always going to be expensive :-)

Re: Safe mooring and Multihulls - costs

Depends a lot on how big you are and how the docks are laid out.

We had a 34x14 cat and never paid extra. In some cases, the shallow draft allowed us to get slips when the marinas were otherwise full because we could squeeze up close to shore.

Of course, if you are taking up 2 slips or they need to put you in an 80ft slip to get enough beam, yeah, they likely will want an up charge.

Many marinas have T-heads or walls and usually, there is no extra charge for them.

So you might look for a spot on the hard. Good Luck.
PS- We have had our boat for 11 years.

I you want to keep your boat in the water year round try the marinas in Bremerton and Port Orchard.

Also FWIW the Washington State Park mooring balls have a 45' size limit for all boats. They are transient only but really handy for recreation and you can buy an annual pass good for the entire state.

Re: Safe mooring and Multihulls - costs

South Coast UK, where exactly?
Changes with ownership but here are some examples.

Poole Harbour, Commissioners moorings, Club moorings, Private moorings Parkstone Bay Marina Not Parkstone Marina (used to be called Mitchell's Boat Yard). Also do drying moorings in winter Whitecliff Bay

Moorings off of Cobbs Quay. Upton Lake and Holes Bay.

Moorings Swanage Bay
Plymouth, Old Munitions Dock, free overnight if you have an interesting multihull, owner is a fan.
Multihull Centre at Millbrook, too shallow for monos.
Torpoint moorings.
Fareham Marina, again very shallow.
Portchester Lake upstream of the castle.
Torquay Public Pontoon, no surcharge for cats, tri's charged extra.
Universal Marina, Bursledon, alongside river pontoons.
Thornham Marina and the marina at the top of Emsworth are multi friendly.

Re: Safe mooring and Multihulls - costs

In our marina multi-hull berths cost 1.3 times as much as the same length mono berth. But, let's compare apples to apples. The total area of an 11m catamaran is typically 90-95m sq, roughly the same as that of a 15m mono. A 15m mono berth costs exactly the same as a 12m Multi berth. So, we literally pay for the area in the water that we occupy.

However, our boat is 11.5m overall and we are in a 10 m berth on the innermost finger. Sticking out a bit creates no problems as nobody goes past us. So for us at least, marina fees are actually cheaper than if we had an equivalent size (by area) mono.

Thanks!
Good to learn these fees are bargain-able.
Also helps to pick up that generally pontoon ends, aka hummer heads, can be viewed similar to monohulls in price.

TBH, initially, i thought there might be some regional or global association that helps multihull owners to get improved prices.

Cheers!

Yes. Many thanks - an interesting list of possible mooring places.
Hopefully will assist some people.

I am looking slightly more to the east of worthing..
Shoreham is full.
Brighton, Newhaven, Eastbourne.. Not entirely price friendly.
Might be an idea to remain in the uk for the summer and sail to the med for the winter..

Cheers!
