Sail GP

https://sailgp.com/races/sydney/

Feb 15 and 16, basically one design 50 foot foiling AC cats racing in Sydney harbour.

They're aiming at 50 knots!

I'm planning to be there!

Re: Sail GP

Yes, I am planning on being there too.

I am a little concerned if the event is real or vapour ware.

Most of the videos of the boats sailing don't show tacks or gybes and some are mixed with "virtual" footage.

I can't find any information on Sydney Waterways web site showing any event
harbour exclusion zones etc.

All the info is press releases and GP50 advertising.

If it does go ahead it will be great watching 6 boats converge at the bottom gate at 5o knots.

From the GP 50 web page of the sailing area the down wind leg should take just over 1 minute at 50 knots

Can you direct us to any supporting event facts?

Noting that club regurgitated press releases aren't what i'm looking for.

I will be there on the 16th. More interested in looking at the boats up close on the land than seeing them sailing. Any advice on how to do this, much appreciated.

Re: Sail GP

On Cockatoo island prior to the racing you can see the boats on land. Apparently there are free guided tours too.

There's a mention here: https://www.sydney.com/destinations/.../sydney-sailgp

Have to wonder how all those wingsails are doing today though, we're getting gusts to 35kts.

Re: Sail GP

I encourage anyone who can make it ... do it! One of the highlights of my life was a week in SFO watching the finals of the AC34. Wife and I had folding bikes and we could ride from one viewing point to another between races; from the SFO Yacht Club breakwater, to above Crissy Field to on the Golden Gate Bridge itself. Watching thru binoculars team NZ nearly capsize from the bridge was amazing. I can not imagine a better spectators venue than SFO, maybe Sydney is. Have fun

Sounds like a plan!

We just got back into Sydney harbour today, wind dropped out to 6 or 7 kts, all bar the Aussies are out practicing right now.

Re: Sail GP

Some cool vapourware out on the harbour today. Really not much wind, 6 or 7 kts.

https://youtu.be/SSod-aIETJg

Funny thing is, they sound like a jet plane flying over a colony of sea lions.
