Satisfy a "virtual" bar dispute.

What size and how many caloriers does a typical 40-45ft - 4 cabin charter cat have compared to a 3 cabin owners version?

Is there a difference between say a Lagoon, Leopard and a FP? One big one or two little ones, maybe two big ones.

I have been on and delivered lots of cats over the years but couldn't answer this seeming simple question.

WHat are caloriers?
Water heaters? If so, we've got one in our owners version.

Satisfy a "virtual" bar dispute.

Most of those boats I’ve worked on only had one. That is if we’re talking about calorifiers (water heaters)

like stu, i assume you mean engine water heaters ?

we have 2 (one on each engine) with isolating valves. use one and then switch over and use the other

cheers,

(ps ; we were originally a 4 cabin charter version)

Yes sorry - calorifier - water heater.

Interesting set up. Do you have 2 or 4 showers? Assuming either calorifier can feed either shower, is the water hot enough by the time it gets to the opposite side? How big are they?

Re: Satisfy a "virtual" bar dispute.

It's a combined electric immersion and calorifier horizontal cylinder under the bunk in the rear guest cabin Calorifier runs off the port engine (there's a eutectic plate in the freezer that runs off the starboard engine).

About 60 litres? (approx 35cm diameter x 60 cm long).
Plenty of hot water in the master shower and galley for us.

Re: Satisfy a "virtual" bar dispute.

chrisr -

We have one on each engine, too. So how did you install isolating valves? So frustrating to have limited capacity of hot water when running on one engine -
In addition the galley sink is heated by only the port engine & often we've used the starboard engine most of the day....same issue I guess with plumbing. We shower in the head corresponding to the side of the boat our most-used engine is on.
Does your plumbing allow for use of hot water from the opposite side of the boat?
Any suggestions would be appreciated....or thread 'title' if there are any other such threads on getting hot water to both sides of catamaran

Clicked on the thread, to soon determine that the subject of discussion was not about a dispute becoming a bar fight, but rather instead about people literally getting into hot water.

Well in the Meme time, taking the liberty to redirecting the thread back to its titled domain.

Just had to insert a bit of alcohol induced meme humor.

All's good.

Cheers mate.

Got to admit the title was intriguing and definitely caused me to mouse over.

Cold water showers are much more invigorating than warm water. Heck just use the pumped raw water deck hose or jump overboard for a swim to rinse. Save the warm water for the galley to wash dishes and pots.

Re: Satisfy a "virtual" bar dispute.

The conversation is just warming up. However, the original question seems to be about the difference between a charter boat hot water system requirements and an owners version of the same boat. Some folks used to land based shower facilities will spend 20 minutes in the shower, and shower every day. Others may believe that a shower robs them of a personal aura and shower once a month ... if ever. I think the question being asked is just too complex and dependent on far too many variables. Holding tank capacities, water makers, weather, number of guests, running engines, plumbing nightmares etc. If you buy a boat then maybe you should ask if there is any hot water system at all then learn to live with that system.
Our ancestors seem to have made it thus far. The Victorians abhorred the idea of showering yet they sailed all over the place taking months at sea. The British built an Empire based on "not having a shower". It may explain why the natives took to the hills when the Poms arrived. In fact it has been often observed that to make a collection of Pommies rapidly vacate a room one would toss in a bar of soap, and they would scatter.
The palace at Versailles, known for its extreme opulence and water supply engineering, had no personal washing facilitates at all or toilets. Basins were used, along with lots of personal rose scented water.
In the tropics, most 45 ft sailing boats probably do not have any hot water system at all. Just another thing to go wrong.
A splash in the ocean or a deck salt water shower, followed by a fresh water rinse then a vigorous rub down from a crew member (or two) sounds more interesting with greater potential.

Re: Satisfy a "virtual" bar dispute.

We have chartered quite a few 40ft cats and owned our own 3 cabin version of one as well, all had a single water heater. In the 3 cabin boat (L450) the master suite was on starboard and water heater in port hull, diagonally opposite to the shower head so quite a distance. It would take 1.5 gallons of water to flow before hot water would come through, which we put into a jug and then re-filled the water tank. Some folks have plumbed a diversion tap direct to the water tank until hot water comes through. This was a 60 liter tank. On our 38ft lightweight dagger boarder we had a propane fired instant hot water service, it was very good and cheap except not the safest device to have on a boat so we were really careful with using it. In fact when we came to sell it we needed a gas compliance and the certifier failed it, so we replaced it with electric.

Might not be typical but the Antares 44i has one in each hull with three berths.
