Seawind 1260 engine options

I'm buying a Seawind 1260 but I'm not 100% sure on the engines.
The Seawind 1260 is offered with 2 engine options:
Yanmar 29hp 3YM30 or
Yanmar 40 hp 3JH40 common rail
previously or still they also have the
Yanmar 39 hp 3JH5E

It seems for me that the larger engine consumes significantly less at any given speed but of course there is the additional weight issue.

Could some owners especially with the larger engines share their experiences, speed/rpm with one or both engines?

Any opinion on this 3JH40 Yanmar common rail engine in relation to fuel purity / trouble free operation and maintenace?
Thanks in advance

Re: Seawind 1260 engine options

Hi,

My wife and I own a SW 1260 (#12) Pleiades and picked her up in Asia Sept 2018 and sailed back round to the east coast via Perth then into Pacific last winter. We sailed 13000 nms in her first 12 months.
I don't have experience with the 40 HP option but find the 30 HP 3YM30AE engines to be excellent in a variety of conditions and sea state.
Good fuel burn and enough range / power to motor sail into a choppy sea and jog along in a calm as required. They are nice sailers.

The weight difference between the 30 and 40hp option is (79kg per side) = 158 KGS. This would be akin to hanging 2x3.4 meter RIB's off the end of the boat...

I think any efficiencies gained from the increased horse power may be lost in other areas.

All the best with your new boat.

Hi… would be interest to learn of your route when you picked up your SW1260, and what time of year that was.

Re: Seawind 1260 engine options

So these Cats are dual engines? The 30 should be fine if so, the 40 is overkill. My 42 ft cat had dual <30 HP engines.
However, If I have a choice, generally, I would always go for the 'lower HP in the bigger block' option with no Turbo.
In addition I would always choose conventional not common rail.

30s are fine. I cannot think of any advantage of going bigger
