Slapping on Shuttleworth Overhangs

Shuttleworth's cat have hulls that overhang the water,
the idea is having a thin hull in the water, and a fat hull above it for more interior room.
I'm wondering just how much these "pregnant hulls" get slapped by waves?
The interior sides seem somewhat protected, but the outside of the hulls
seem quite vulnerable to getting slapped.

Re: Slapping on Shuttleworth Overhangs

Don't know personally, but I've talked with a couple of Shuttleworth owners and nobody complained about it. They both seemed to be very happy with their boats.

Hi Nimblemotors,

I believe the older designs as shown in your first picture of the Tektron 50 did suffer from wave slapping noises.

The newer designs as you show in your second picture of "Life's A Dream" have round hull sides to avoid the slapping noises.

both are beautiful!
If I had either, I would not mind the wave slapping;-)

I have been on Life's a dream, it is a really nice boat. The slapping issue on stepped hulls is less evident when sailing than it is at anchor. I heard no slapping on Life's a dream in keeping with multihull sailors observations on the shape.

I have an older style shuttleworth with the more pronounced flare. Wave slap at sea or at anchor is never really an issue. The bump out is gradual and fair enough that the water never slaps but just keeps moving.
I have sailed on a Wharram Tiki36 , which has a hard chime just above the waterline and it could get annoying. Mainly at anchor or more gentle sea, the noise would run down the length of the hulls as the waves passed. The owner eventually added some fairing and the problem went away.

Re: Slapping on Shuttleworth Overhangs

I have a two year old Shuttleworth 32 with a few thousand miles under the hulls and many nights in choppy anchorages. I heard about the flared hull slapping before we launched the boat and was worried it'd keep us awake but we've never experienced it.
