Re: Telling Stories about length

Out of curiosity I measured my Wildcat 35 last time it was hauled. Its about 34.5'. So I should start using the exact length in marinas...though I think my solar panels probably extend to the full 35'.

From now on I am going to tell folks who ask about Mana, my Cape George 36, that we have a 12 Meter. I feel richer and more important just dreaming about it.

Re: Telling Stories about length

I would like to say I am very proud of this group. We made it fifteen responses before the innuendo on length vs beam showed up. I would have expected that much sooner.

Mine is 34.5 feet. I tend to round up or down depending on the audience and mood. Marina =34, attractive admirer =35.

Re: Telling Stories about length

I had a Viking 33. It was 33' 7" length on deck (LOD). A later version with a taller mast, a different rudder and the very same hull was called a Viking 34. Our custom steel pilothouse cutter is a titular 40 footer. It's 39' 11" LOD for some obscure and now obsolete tax reasons from the 1980s, when it was designed and built, but it's 41' 10" when the bowsprit length is measured. Maybe longer with the windvane off the stern.

So I call it a 12-metre boat.

But what’s the beam

Re: Telling Stories about length

"Give him an inch and he will take a mile." Probably another old boaty saying.

Length is open to interpretation as in the old supposed Russian physics teacher joke in which he explains thermal expansion thus ... "Well, the days in summer are longer, aren't they?"

Yes!!!
The bowplatform must be calculated, however!. Once upon a time boats where mesured by their waterline length, and cheating became apparent in old CCA class with very long overhangs and even the mizzen sail was not added to SA if the mizzen mast wast planted aft of the waterline as if nothing existed beyond the water line. An Etchell 22 is actually 30 ft long. then the Europeans came in and like other matcho braggings, length grew more then reality...

Re: Telling Stories about length

Funny how the situation seems to change the way we regard length. For a Marina my Mirage 27 is just that. Not now that I'm selling that boat because when it was redesigned to the 27 from the 26 it actually became more than 28 feet long. When comparing it to other boats claiming 27 feet but actually measuring a bit over 26 the difference can be substantial in that range.

Re: Telling Stories about length

The bigger question here is what do you tell the marina your LOA is? "But my Lipari 40 is only 38 feet!"

Tell them 36'. I've wonder the same thing in reverse. Boats with tenders hanging on davits, swim platforms or bow sprits. I guess it depends on the dock master.

Re: Telling Stories about length

A foot in non US/UK countries can be anything between 0.250 and 0.33 m. So read the length in meters, please. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_(unit)
