Amazing, let's applaud whoever installed the rig.

Although I think the forestay will be toast.

Ouch. The captain might not have seen it from their vantage point, but from the cameras vantage, the bridge is lowering. I wonder the liability of the bridge operator?

None. The reason that occurred is the captain didn't communicate the passage with the bridge. It happens way more than it should. You don't find a bridge open and just 'go for it'.

The captain should have radioed the bridge operator to request passage. Indicating vessel name, description and direction. They then should have waited for a confirmation.

Since that is a narrow opening, the bridge operator will open traffic one way, then the other. They will broadcast this over the radio. (e.g. bridge is opening for downstream, inbound, North bound traffic, or whatever). The bridge operator will count the vessels in one direction, then open in the other direction.

Otherwise, you could get caught with 2 boats making way through the bridge in both directions at the same time. Sure, in the video, the captain could see the other side, however that is not always the case with all bridges.

The bridge operator would have cleared all the vessels in both directions, then closed the bridge.

This is 100% the captains fault.

Even still, I'd expect the bridge operator has a responsibility to make sure the channel is clear and that it's safe to close the bridge (same as they have to make sure the road is clear before opening. The boat was awfully close when that bridge started dropping. So that would make this a shared fault, as neither party's actions on its own should have caused the issue, but when they both failed in their responsibilities, this happened.

That’s an automated bridge, complete with traffic lights for marine traffic. The “captain” is an idiot.

Yeah you can see him veer to port to try and make it. Looks like the camera man taking the video knew what was about to happen as well.

Sorry meant brand. There are a few brands in both mono and multi which attract less experienced owners it seems
