Epoxy gelcoat is more for finish than protection and does not give the same UV protection that polyester or vinyl ester gelcoats give. Both epoxy and epoxy gelcoat will degrade when exposed to UV.



You can use polyester or vinyl ester gel coat with epoxy but it must be compatible so vinyl ester is preferred. In either case the gelcoat has to cure before additional layup and epoxy is applied. The primary reason being that shrinkage rates are different.
