Trampoline material, what is this?

Hi,

a friend of ours bought a cat with a trampoline which is very nice to walk on and which leaves enough gaps to let water easily pass.
I like it more than our net.

This stuff feels almost like encased fiberglass filaments.
Unfortunately our friend does not know where this stuff came from.

Anyone know what this is?
What is its none boat use?
Experiences?

It looks very similar to our Athena trampoline. There are 2 sizes 30 x 30 or 13 x 13mm. We have the 13 x 13 which is very comfortable on the feet and drains perfectly. Plus a pretty reasonable price. They do made to measure as well as standard boats. https://sailonet.com/en/fountaine-pa...yester_30x30mm

I had a look at the link you gave that might be an option, but it's a different material.

The material he has is almost rigid. It's somehow fused glued and seems not woven.

Re: Trampoline material, what is this?

Just remember that "rip stopping" should be a vital facet of net choice. I stay away from what are called Ferrari style nets because they can just let go. A Schionning had these nets and they broke whilst two of the three crew were on them. Thankfully there was still one person not on the nets who could steer the boat back and pick them up.

So look into the ability of any net to fail slowly - for me, that means old style cod end nets, cheap, strong, long lasting and really good at failing very slowly.

cheers

Good point regarding rip stop.

We currently have a 5mm x 50mm knot less net. It's strong and well lasting, but not very comfortable to walk on.
It comes from a supplier of sporting nets and was not very expensive.

Still, what is a Ferrari style net?

Horrible ***** used a lot in the 90's
I went through ours one night at anchor

Black trawler Cod End net was a far better and cheaper alternative at the time

Like this
They are calling this golf net made from polyester

I have seen similar in Dyneema

Re: Trampoline material, what is this?

50 mm squares seems big - I reckon that would not be very comfy.

When it comes to nets I like having them with large enough holes to put my bare toes and fingers into when needed. Again a good reason to avoid smooth nets with smaller holes. I like holes big enough for the thumb and no more. There have been a few times when I have been setting up a kite in wavey conditions I have gone full "cat with claws out" mode and held on whilst the boat wiggled about. There is no way I would ever have nets I can't grab with all of my appendages (I always sail bare foot), my cat is really clear of deck gear - super simple but eminently usable.

Also I like having nets rugged enough to tie kites and screechers down on. So again tough old cod end wins for me. Plus my cod end nets are 23 years old and still going strong. I had a trimaran for 8 years and had 3 different nets. My current cat has black nets. Being black seems to be very good at resisting UV.
