Re: Two sets of tools

Well it's a catamaran, so of course, you need two of everything! But I keep all of my tools in one place; centrally located in the salon. To cut down on return trips, I fill a canvas tool bag for tools expected for each project.

I must have a huge collection of tools in the “other set of tools “ because invariably the tool I need is always in that set. So I have to buy it again.
I see you have the same disease we do. (The tool collection in our RV is getting quite impressive. And since it's an older RV we know that if we took some of them out the next trip we went on we'd need that specific thing to fix a problem.)

That is, of course, in addition to 'frequent use' duplicates. If there is a tool that is very frequently used in one specific place (like my mallet I use for breaking up bags of ice, or a couple screwdrivers) then assuming it's a reasonable size/cost we just buy one that lives in or near that spot, which is different from the one that lives in the tool set. (We use paint/nailpolish to color code, usually.) That way the frequent use one doesn't get taken off when someone needs that tool for some other thing, and no one gets stranded with a tool set missing a tool because they forgot to grab it from wherever it keeps being used.

So if we had a multihull we probably wouldn't have a full tool set for each hull, but odds are good we'd have a few items in each hull for the most commonly used tools, plus a main kit that you could take to where you needed it for bigger jobs.

Re: Two sets of tools

Now we have a crew member on our boat who constantly steels tools and hides them. If we need a specific tool invariably this is the one he has hidden somewhere. It is especially annoying when several days after completing a job by improvising with inappropriate tools he sneaks it back into the top of the toolbox.

I have one of those crew as well. Or he takes it home to do a job, or leaves in the RV or the tool-trailer.
It is sad life that my partner does not go much sailing with me, so I single hand most of the time. On the other hand very happy to have a boat to go sailing... sans a few tools.

Re: Two sets of tools

One metric, one imperial.

Now that I think about it I guess I can finally retire that imperial toolbox. I don't think there is anything imperial on this boat.
