Underwater lights

This subject comes up every now and then and after the obligatory “another hole in your boat” and “I think those are annoying “ comments sometimes there are good recommendations.

For the record, yes I want to put small holes in my boat because we love to watch the fish at night. We have been using drop in lights but they are a pain and we are hauled out right now anyway. This is a good time to install the lights.

They just discussed this in the most recent episode of Gone with The Wynns. See their recommendation at 2:38.

Nope
Imho drilling holes in your boat for nothing more than entertainment or "look at me" value is something no sane or sensible person would do.

The whole boat is entertainment, isn't it? So all the holes in it serve the purpose of entertainment, don't they?

Lumitec Seablaze2 Spectrum Full-Colour RGBW. Great for observing the marine life food chain at night in marine parks. Also you can select a primary colour for the type of fish you are seeking if fishing outside a marine park. One 13mm thru hull hole for the cable and 3 bronze fixing screws.

Lumitec Lighting » Blog Archive SeaBlazeX2 LED Underwater Light - Lumitec Lighting

We install one on each transom of our sailing catamaran. Great results.

If you have a power boat then this video gives you an idea of water sports entertainment application too:

They said the same thing when they started putting in A/C units. Oh, and toilets! 😏

The first plastic boat builders. There were no flushing heads - just a hole w/or without a bucket. Then all sorts of thru-hulls appeared for heads, A/C units, water makers, galley foot pumps, etc... Some were vast improvements but others were for comfort and enjoyment.

That’s what “they” did.

We installed the multicolor OceanLED X series and are very happy with the the results. Some wild shaped critters comes out at night ;-)

FYI: I also paint the metal part with prop speed and the lens with just the clear part of the prop speed, and it does quite well for marine growth.

I like the idea of drop in lights.

Which ones do you have, why were they a pain?

We don't have or need a/c and holding tank pump out is above water, not pretty but its how its done. All toilets go into holding tank.
Only underwater through hull on a 60fter is 1 engine and 1 genset.

Re: Underwater lights

Some lights require very large holes, like ceiling LED lights, whilst others just the size of the wires - 6-8MM depending on the lights you go with - A leak from a 6-8mm hole is not a major issue to seal up until you can haul and fix, whilst a 90mm hole which some of them require will sink you relatively fast.
