Used Cat market in the next 10 years

Obviously no one has a crystal ball but hey most of you know more about the used boat markets than I do at this point. With how popular catamarans are becoming and how many are being sold I'm thinking that in the next 10 years I could expect a much greater selection of used catamarans available for purchase. What do you guys think?

I would think so, also would like to think that the models just being replaced will deprecate substantially as the newer models catch on.

Yes, with one remark. There will be more mass production boats, less custom/one-offs. But most important - market is slowly get filled with catamarans. Right now, comparing to monohulls, catamaran market is still nearly non-existing.

And the demand side is rapidly expanding as they become more accepted.

I don't think there is enough data to say anything intelligent. I don't see evidence of a shift.

Re: Used Cat market in the next 10 years

in my opinion we are witnessing bigger trend/shift here.

1. boat - you out there in nature and keeping fit longer - attractive for retirees of any age

2. cat is like a house/island - private no one hears you, less insects, no burglers and in some areas way cheaper than property. Women like it. You can fish and get organic food for free, like our ancestors.

3. Older people will not like going to retirement home, especially now as share prices of such institutions skyrocketed, indicating their attitude will be focussed towards extracting money from anyone close to them.

So, demand for cats will persist, as this is attractive alternative to preset lifestyle designed by politicians, however as it is relatively cheap to build cat, prices will not have ability to go up too much, so will remain relatively affordable.

It is my personal opinion the value of catamarans will drop significantly over the next 5 years. Why? Because I am in the process of buying one now and such is my luck!

Babyboomers

They have money and want comfy and there are lots of them.

I expect that will suck up all the extra supply.

Now 20-30yrs out as the babyboomers die off or just get too old , there may be a glut of catamarans.

Bacchus, you slayed me with that quip. A man after my own pragmatic sensibilities. As the Irish will often quip..."if I didn't have bad luck...I wouldn't have any luck at all."

Thanks for the chuckles.

Re: Used Cat market in the next 10 years

Can't afford the beasts. In my mind, I am a trailer sailor. I am coastal. I can go upwind, like Corsair trimarans boast, at 65 mph. I can go from California to Key West in 4 days. So, as much as I would love a fat cat ...not in my cards. The other thing that inhibits me...I'm frugal by nature. I could never allow myself to charter a cat for 8-10k for a week of fun in the sun.

Here is a forum question for ya....Will there come a time when there just isn't any space for dockage or mooring with all of the wide cats available?

I am still in the boatyard in Napa restoring my Sharpie. I ran across an Aussie couple who bought a very wide cat...maybe up in Pacific Northwest. It is so wide that they had to sail it all the way down to Napa Marina because there wasn't one boatyard that could get her out of the water correctly. Those are their words ...not my assumptions. Travel lifts aren't wide enough for her. So, Napa has a sled they can put in the water underneath the bridgedeck. Then they shore it up as she is slowly extracted. I'll try and get a picture of her today. What a long way to go to get some work done on your boat.

This begs the question: What type of boat will these people lean towards - Cat, Trawler, mono-hull?

Should have also added "houseboat" to the list.

Re: Used Cat market in the next 10 years

Good boats , as they go out of production can go up in value or at least hold there original purchased price . which has happened to Westsail 32 's and hopefully will happen to our Seawind 1160 deluxe version .

Catana 43 47, outremer are others that have held their values well.
