VA "Good Value" marina reccomendations for a cat?

Hi Folks-

We're looking for a marina in Virginia to keep our 48' cat when we return to land. Looking for a reasonable cost option, and marina amenities are NOT important as we won't be there very often. Safe and secure, with a reputable management team is important, however.

Any suggestions? We've heard Deltaville is a good place to look, but there seem be dozens of small operators (which is fine) and a recommendation would help narrow the search.

Cheers- Matt

Southall Marina or Salt Ponds Marina - both in Hampton, VA.

I forgot to mention Little Creek Marina in Norfolk. And if you get a spot there, make sure to order some of Mia's absolutely delicious (and very creative) desserts, especially the cupcakes.

What's your beam? I think many of the marinas in our area have limited space for cats. Yankee Point has one slip plus one t-head that a cat can go to but do not know if it's occupied.
Chesapeake Boat Basin in Kilmarnock is a nice marina with floating docks, and I know they are renovating some older slips as well. Fishing Bay marina has some decent sized slips but don't know their availability for cats.
Deltaville has several nice marinas.
Olverson's off of the Potomac has some t-heads,
Urbanna has a few options too.
Many counties in Virginia have personal property tax on boats, but there are a few counties that don't and Lancaster County is one. This is where Yankee Point and Chesapeake Boat Basin are. There are also some marinas in Carter's Creek (rappahannock) that might be available and they are in Lancaster as well.

We're pretty wide at 26 feet.

Do you know how the personal property tax works in VA? What if you are a non-resident of the state and only have the boat in the county? Is it location of the individual or location of the boat that triggers the tax? Guess I need to do some research....

The boat location determines property tax and it used to be that where the boat was January 1st, but now, most jurisdictions are now going with "where the boat is over 6 months of the year"
If you are out traveling in your boat over the 6 month duration, I think this could be a loophole but you can always call the county that you're interested in to verify. It doesn't matter if you are a resident of Va or not.

Where would you be coming in from? Some of the locations I mentioned are off the beaten path and could make driving there a bit longer. Some marinas are also somewhat remote where going to the grocery store or a hardware store could be a half an hour drive, Yankee point falls in this category.
Deltaville has a fair number of amenities as well as Kilmarnock and Urbanna.

We've been actively cruising for 10 years, but need to go back to Chicago for an indefinite period for family reasons. So we really just need a safe, secure spot to "store" the boat. She's also on the market, so not sure how long we would even need a slip for, if she sells. Thanks for the advice!

We keep our cat in Urbanna while we are up north. At what used to be Urbanna Port Marina. It and the sister marina, Bridge, were recently bought and finally merged into one. Not sure if they have a whole U open for a Cat, but they may have a T Head open. Urbanna is nice because it is surround on all sides by land and the walk to the IGA grocery store is about 10 minutes if you walk slow. Plenty of restaurants and the ABC store is also right downtown.

Thanks. So you end up paying a personal property tax on the boat when docked there?

You can try York River Yacht Haven: https://yorkriveryachthaven.com/. Boat property tax in Gloucester County is negligible.

We've also stayed at Cape Charles, both the town marina and CCYC: : https://capecharlesmarine.com/about/. Despite what CCYC says, they can NOT haul a boat with a beam in excess of 25'.

Another place is Severn Yachting Center: https://severnyc.com/ The road in floods in very high tides!

Keep hurricanes in mind. If you're going to be away from the boat for extended periods, get in hurricane prepared condition (sails off, canvas off, everything battened down, etc.). One year we did the drill three times.
