Re: VW Diesel as Inbord Drive

One-time Myers Manx owner and from-new owner of a 2005 golf mkV 2.0TDi checking in to a thread that's just getting better and better. From initial great news for OP, to a thread combining my two loves - VW and boats!

Oh, and John Muir - best how-to manual ever!

Manx were the bomb... The "Original Dune Buggy"!!!

The great thing about V-dubs, is that taking them apart and tweaking them was:
1. CHEAP
2. EASY
3. Made them better than before...

Re: VW Diesel as Inbord Drive

If I remember right, there are only three bolts that hold the motor in, and one of them does double duty and is one of the two bolts that hold the starter in? Seems like it should be four though
I learned pretty quick that to do any exhaust work etc., it was easier to just drop the motor, remove the distributor to change points.
I thought they way the belt was tensioned was brilliant too.

It was 4, definitely 1 thru the starter, with another keeping it in place... Replacing all with studs was key...

Priceless was the look of the mother the first time she saw an engine dropped for routine work... "You took the motor out why?"

Shims for belt tensioning surely was brilliant...

Re: VW Diesel as Inbord Drive

I have owned 9 different brands of diesels over the last 5 decades, and the VW was the smoothest running of any of them. The mostly windless delivery I did from Seattle to SF with a Pathfinder that was under a dinette seat, was surprising , in that the noise and vibration were very low in the main cabin. Great engine. _____Grant.
