Water maker/ deck wash share same thru hull?

Thinking of adding a water maker and a deck wash pump to our Lagoon 40, installing both in the starboard anchor locker. I was thinking of just using one thru hull and then a Y valve . Seems to me the less holes in the boat the better. Thoughts?

Less holes is good, probably easy plumb y valves don't need to run both at once. On our boat we have no thru hull for salt water wash down. We have two male hose bibs near windlass, one for in one for out. We put a short piece of hose over the side for salt water wash. Also for mobile bilge pump run the inlet hose to where you want, this past summer we have been 6 months not once at a dock so we fill buckets with fresh water in the dinghy and use the pump to wash the boat with fresh water, pretty nifty for our lifestyle but not that handy if you typically have access to a dock with water.

We do it with a spectra Ventura 150 just using a tee. Don’t run the wash down pump while making water.

No problem, we run a spectra 150 with a separate washdown pump, same thruhull, mind you not usual to run at the same time but it occasionally does happen and no effect to either unit. Less holes in the boat the better, cheers

Re: Water maker/ deck wash share same thru hull?

I did something similar, though installed an oversized thru-hull to a sea strainer then valves to watermaker, wash down, and generator. Best practice is assure the sum of the demand appliances do not exceed the supply side. But in your case it will be very unlikely to have both watermaker and wash down running at same time.

BTW, while I agree that fewer holes in hull are better, the more important benefits to me are fewer sea strainers if you care about have supply lines fed through a sea strainer (I do), and I can now locate seacocks in easy to reach locations.

Also, Groco makes a nifty manifold to hang off a sea strainer to feed multiple raw water devices.

That is a neat bit of hardware.

Of course.
Less holes the better.
Some expensive boats models (e. g. Amel) have only one inlet for all sea water uses (through a manifold)
Less dangers, easier to maintain.
Only benefits.

One item of note - I believe all engine manufacturers specify a dedicated inlet water source. A manifold/sea-chest that involves engine water may cause warranty issues if an engine is new enough. The Groco manifold cautions against using for an engine too, but clearly that's the intended use-case.

Attached is a picture of a slick setup I grabbed from a Steve D'Antonio article that served as a pattern for my setup. Single sea-strainer and single thru-hull of course.

That's a fine idea as long as you use only the port anchor locker for your anchors. You wouldn't want wet dripping wet chain and rope stored in same locker as water pumps due to possible corrosion.

Do you have a heads flushing through-hull nearby (like just on the other side of the bulkhead?) Might be another option for you.

Re: Water maker/ deck wash share same thru hull?

MAy be a check valve in the hose to the water maker pump. This will stop the wash down pump sucking the watermaker feed pump dry, particularly if it is not a self priming pump.
