weight difference on Leopard

How can be that an old leopard 43 is 19,000 lb and a newer 40 is almost 50% more at 29,600.

What have changed ?

Check comparable boats from other manufacturers like FP and Lagoon. They have all got significantly heavier over the last 20 years. A lot more furniture, boats are higher, wider and fatter, and for full load carry more water and fuel. Then of course, many have AC, generators and multiple fridges to fill up the extra space.

Re: weight difference on Leopard

Could also be they are talking loaded weight per design.

Re: weight difference on Leopard

The older Leopard 43 (and 46) were a M&M designed boat that were decent weight and decent performance while still in the charter market. I believe they were some of the first Leopard designs (As opposed to the previous charter only Moorings designs) and they expected that individual buyers would care about performance.

Those boats appear to be good compromises between a condo and a cruising boat.

But the market apparently didn't care about performance and since then Leopards have gone further and further into the condominium category.

I might be mistaken though, as I find only the 38, 44 and 46 on their site:

I find this extremely good info, the 38 is kind of my front runner of choice. I wonder what the performance of a 38 to a 39 is, ie is the 38 that much faster on average.

The one thing is they talk about balsa core, I wonder if it is below the water line as well?

Re: weight difference on Leopard

The 40 is a lovely yacht. Super spacious, light and airy. The forward galley layout is awesome.
The later ones had some nice changes, especially the change to island beds in aft cabins. No longer climb in through a frame.
We purchased new last year into Moorings. Our previous was a 44 with Sunsail and was in good condition after 5 years.

We will get half our money back over the next 5 years and come out with a relatively cheap 6 year old boat. We plan to keep this one to cruise.

We went with the 3 cabin as we felt it will get less use.

We will use her regularly so we will be able to keep an eye on the maintenance.

Yep Boats have got heavier - but less lies are being told as well.

Actually the L43 is a Simonis/Voogd design.

The low bridgedeck Leopards is a classis SV design. They did the older L45/47 too and others.
