Re: What catamaran is this

It's most likely a Chris White design 47 ft. If the weather didn't change drammatically between when the accident happen and when the picture is taken , the sea state and the wind seem pretty benign..
Probably they were under spi (the mark on the right hand sitde of the boat) but as long as you don't dive the nose of the boat into the wave, this kind of boats simply go faster and faster, they don't capsize.. Strange..

Cheers

The Atlantic 47 Mastfoil had keels and this one has boards. Did you mean an A48?

I don't know the answer, but several details are interesting: daggerboard in the center of the amas (thus making accommodations really challenging; virtually no cabin forward of the mast, just trampoline; and no flare in the amas suggesting accommodations, either.

I'd guess it's in the 40' range.

Hi Chuck, all really good points. Initially I was thinking the Maine Cat 38 or 41
because of those very design points you raised. (central daggers and not a lot forward of the mast.
I am not so sure about the hull flare. I am sure someone on the other side of the world more familiar with this design will know.

The walk through in the video shows how good design can minimise the impact of vertical central daggerboards.

As for catamaran term Amas, I think Wikipedia says it best with....

In modern sailing, the term is sometimes used to refer to the outrigger on a proa or trimaran, or the two sections of a catamaran.[1] However, calling the two sections of a catamaran by the word ama, is not technically correct since they are of equal size. A catamaran is technically a wa'a wa'a or double canoe connected by an aka.[2]

Thanks for you contribution.

Re: What catamaran is this

Summarising from above comments - probably ~40ft high performance very light weight inshore racing catamaran sailing with a big colorful sail (spinnaker). And I'll add a WAG that wind speed is about 15 knots from the crests of the swells/waves that are just visible in the video. So going way out on a limb, high performance boat, fully powered up, makes a mistake, or gets a bigger than expected gust.

And for those who didn't catch it from the article, it looks like it was sailing in the ocean off a beach just west of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Yer so no different to any other multihull capsize then as has been shown time and time again. Get caught in a gust and over you go.

See following pictures to see light weight performance catamarans don't have a monopoly on this very unsatisfactory outcome. Stay safe.

I guess if you've never owned a boat you can conclude anything based on nothing.

Am I correct in understanding that all catamarans will capsize if ever hit by a gust of wind? Hmm ...

Don’t bother. It’s vapourware.

Seriously one gust and over you go. Seriously. I have sailed a cat in a cyclone. Didn’t go over. Didn’t look like going over.

I was on Alan's boat (44c) on Friday night when two storm fronts blew over. Obviously we flipped several times but the good thing is we didn't notice it and neither of us spilled a beer. The mono next to use that dragged and nearly hit another mono while disappearing back up towards Blackwattle Bay provide some entertainment, however.

I'm back on the boat with Alan tomorrow to watch some of the 'boats that don't exist'/vapourware foiling bad boys and while I won't be taking a life jacket I'm sure we'll flip several more times. My only concern is that we continue to not spill any beer

Controlled spills are acceptable.
