Re: What Size To Haul All Our Stuff?

Get a bigger motor yacht. You already know what it takes to run. You have room for toys, dive compressors, multiple boats and rafts, etc... I run an 83', often by myself.

I've been on a couple charters of large captained cats and at $22k to $25k per week-like you say chartering is not a great option.

But don't tell anyone that the captain single handed each one...

Best wishes.

Re: What Size To Haul All Our Stuff?

I've looked at a lot of cats .. space , stowage , accommodations and modern facilities .. 2006-2008 lagoon 50 will pull up well under a mil and allow for modifications .. probably not jetskiis but certainly a performance rib on a custom duckboard . I offer this with some hesitance as I'm a diehard fountaine pajot sailor

Forget the multi.. get yourself a Jongert, some friends of mine had one and the stern lowered hydraulically to allow them to ride their 2 1200cc Harleys out onto the dock.. they also stowed a RIB and other stuff in the garage.. 90ft of dream boat..

Never been on a cat bigger than a Hobie so out of my comfort zone here, but is it possible to store the PCWs between the hulls underneath?

Have a hoist through the deck that lifts the PWC up to the bottom of the deck. Might be a problem finding hard points on the PWC that could take the stress and strain of the CAT movement in bad weather, or maybe just a sling under the PWC like the strap used to hold a PWC on a trailer would do it?

I just can't help but imagine that "all our stuff" is a Ball and Chain!

Yes, I do have envy, but that envy is for the style of the parasitic wasp that lays its eggs in the caterpillar and then flies away with the job done. I have far less envy of the dung beetle that works so hard keeping all this stuff together and moving it from place to place.

Don't misunderstand me. I do admire the financial resources and the play with all the toys,- but there is a great freedom in non ownership and the ability to travel lightly without any burden.

There's no dishonor in accumulating large amounts of possessions, but there's no less status in having less. Truly, no sour grapes

My definition of "ball and chain" on a boat would be all the toys and systems that tie you down with their maintenance. Not sure how that comment could be considered sour grapes ?

Maybe not sour grapes, but I don't think this post was made to get some lifestyle general advices..

Maybe a little thread drift? I don't think the posts were unrelated to the thread, just a little personal opinion interjected.

Re: What Size To Haul All Our Stuff?

Thanks for any pertinent replies:

Wongai64: we want and need room for family and friends to come and enjoy things with us,a 50' won't do.

Boatman61: The only Jongerts under a Mill are 35-40 years old,and have a 10' draft. Newer ones with the garage you love, cost from $2-3 M.
And have an 11 to 12' draft.
I fail to see how any of this has any value to cruising Florida and the Bahama reefs...draft access to our house is 7'.

Westwinds: thanks for the idea, but the bigger cats have large platforms aft, that go abeam.

Hudson/MSJ: I don't see how a few boards and kayaks, and the odd oil change on a PWC will be a ball and chain.
We heard the same thing when going from 50' to 70'+
Take out the PWC and it's what every cruising boat has anyways.
Yes there will be more of the systems, but that also gives back up. If your one and only crapper gives up the ghost-what then? But when you have 2 or 3 or 4..fix it whenever you feel like.
Like I've said quite a few times,we want and need space and fun things so friends and family can enjoy life too...just spreadin' the good times around. Others may enjoy having 4 or 5 or 6 extra people jammed into a 45' cat with little else to do,but we don't.
Besides, what do other cruisers with small boats and less maintenance to do when at anchor-stare out at the waves and clouds, drink all the time...what?

We love doing things and yes that includes maintenance. My wife can do anything I can do on the boat, and many things better as I'm welll over 6' tall and don't fit everywhere. And It's good to have a sense of achievement, rather then sitting around all day and doing SFA.

Besides, guests know when they show up there's going to be stuff that needs to be done,it's not a lay-around-and-be-fed-and-entertained sort of thing.
When a big boat needs to washed and cleaned,3 people can get a lot done in 3 hours. Especially when they know something good will happen later on.

Steve: Perhaps-don't know/don't care.

DRS: Thanks,we have been on this one, had so much room it was crazy. But ugly as a brick, and no real place to sit out under the star with an unblocked 360/180 view.
Welcome to Wendon Yachts

Any power cat under a Mill is ugly and ancient.
