Re: 2 stroke oil has disadvantages.

From experience any boat using a Tohatisu motor will have a fun time sailing. Not motoring.

Re: 2 stroke oil has disadvantages.

I have been reading this thread and finally pulled my owner's manual for my 2 stroke Tohatsu 8 hp engine and read the oil recommendation. It says, "Use genuine engine oil or the other recommended one, that is, TCW3. We do not recommend any other two-stroke engine oil."

Just an FYI. Since I always have engine oil on board- easiest to use.

Re: 2 stroke oil has disadvantages.

The subject of lubrication oil without looking the total story of the fuel types and performance types of O\B is fruitless problem
A good example is the gasoline petrol benzine formulas are in constant change. The original model T car oil fuel were more like Colman's fuel very low Ron of 70 and easy to vaporise inside carberator but made for 6:1 compression ratio. Fuel formulas changed to work for higher compession engine with 12:1 ratio and lead edditives and stuff like toulene . You could in he1960 to 1970 era park a car for many years return and start it up. The need to have ethanol fuel additive and lower NOX required dropping the compression ratio to 10:1 . That made the oil companies with demands for higher RON change the gasoline formulas to contain generally four types gasoline mixes that are not stable with max recomended shelf life of Three months. The gasoline fuels of the 1970 era had the best lubricating qualities as fuel. Ethanol or methanol have bad lubricating qualities and worse soak up water from the air. The higher the Ethanol or methanol content the mre oil needed to lubricate the 2 stroke engines .Also the more oil of any type will delay the ignition times and in 2 strokes and the more ethanol content will also cause the need to advance the timing. A good example of the subject of high power engine is 400 HP 65 kg 1500 cc turbo 3 pot nizzan engine that does some 20,000 rpm. it requires the most best high cost fully synthetic fuel on the planet to deliver these power levels. The oil has detergents to keep the oil passing through the small holes on the piston rings . Use cheapo oil and the engine is toast . A low power marine outboard engine can tolerate most any type of oil but the thicker it is the risk the piston rings will gum up. Castor oil if left over winter turns all sort of gummy .
. Modern gasoline left on shelf with closed cans will separate out heavier stuff to the bottom lighter stuff to top of the can . You can buy a chemical that will extend the shelf life of the gasoline fuel. There also exists special high cost gasolines for preppers for generator use that will remain stable with shelf life exceeding 20 years. Saying some sort of older 1990 O\B does yada yada versus a modern ETEC is comparing apples to oranges. A modern engine has to have a lubrication oil that mixes with modern fuels and factors in Ethanol or methanol mixes. If the engine has a turbo it is more vital to have have the correct type lubrication oil to suit the plain bearing of the turbo which need very thin type lubrication oils. All sides are probably correct on their experiments to do with their era of 2 stroke engine . Trying the same experiment with a 2 stroke from another era is very risky . For polution issues it clear as day that electric power will be the norm in 20 years as battery power density displaces IC .So the marine life and climate change believers will just have to suck it up until then
