Accessing Fuel tank

So….. I have a 1982 Morgan OI 416.

I need to have my fuel polished and the company that does that can’t access the primary fuel tank. Because, of course, Morgan put that tank under the motor.

We can see the tank access from both the main engine access area and from a cut out under the sink. But it’s quite a ways down. ……. Has anyone done this project before and or does anyone have any suggestions on how to address this?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Accessing Fuel tank

Sounds like an immense project.

Zero experience on said rig. Hopefully, someone else will pipe up.

That being said, if I was in your shoes, I'd polish the fuel with a high output pump (60 GPM if using a Racor 500). Use the existing supply and return lines through a 30 (&/or 10 &/or 2 micron filters).

Cycle the tanks a couple times or so (ref their capacity); this will help you determine if you have any obvious problems (bugs, water, dirt, sludge, ...).

This won't fix a dirty tank per se, but it will clean your fuel well enough.

Best,

Adam

PS I am in the process of inserting a polishing system on my boat. So I am little wired to "polish fuel" mode; I am putting a stand alone (semi-permanent) system on board. Determined it's less expensive to build my own, stand alone polishing system then a one-time polish. Good lucks

Re: Accessing Fuel tank

When I had my fuel polished, they accessed the tank, through the deck mounted fuel fill.

Re: Accessing Fuel tank

Assuming the yard where you keep your boat does have a fuel polishing machine, they would access the fuel tank through the deck fuel fill point.
