I have a pdf which has the wiring diagram on page 14. Its probably more of a directional guide, atleast on my boat wires are not fully like on the diagram, more like one hell of a mess. ( "luckily" i can blame my red-green colorblind brother for that)

Theres some other usefull basic technical data also, valve clearance etc.

....ANd surprise the pdf is too big (8mb)
So i took photos of the diagram. Hope it helps !!
But if somebody wants the pdf i can send it to email, just ask

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

I was just looking at a Swedish boat with a Volvo 21 A engine which is how I came to the forum, since this is the third or fourth time I landed here I decided to join.

The boat and engine were built in 1975, the Peugeot 505 did not come out till the 80's. The 504 came out late 60's , early 70's

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

Hello, The Volvo Penta 21 is an Indenor Diesel with heritage from around 1965, initially installed in the Peugeot 404. Indenor was a specialist engine company that was part of the Peugeot group. The engine developed and grew from it's initial 1816cc to 1948cc, then 2112cc through to it's final 2304cc as used in the Ford Sierra/Granada with some Block changes as it went.
The 1,816cc (XD 4/85 as 85mm was the bore size) and 1948cc (XDP 4/88 with 88mm Bore size) engine found it's way into the Citroen H van (replacing a 4 cylinder Perkins) and Peugeot 404 and 504.
These were also used extensively in Tractors.

Later versions were the XDP 4/90 (2,112cc) which was used in the Peugeot 504 and then later the 505/605 plus Marinised for the Volvo Penta 21.

If you go to parts of South Africa you will still find old 504/505 saloons being used as Taxis' with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock.

See our web page for more info on how to get the best from the Indenor engine which we specialise in rebuilding : Atlantic Motorhome : Citroen H van Rebuilt Indenor Diesel Engines

We will put more Volvo Penta relevant info at the bottom of the page in the next few weeks.

Workshop Manual for md21b

Hi there everyone,
I just bought a sailboat (Classis 35 Lady Laura) with an md21b engine (110s sail drive) which I keep here in Rome. I was looking for a workshop manual. I found one cheap in Australia but it is for the md21a.

I was wondering if anyone could point out the differences between the two engines and whether I could rely on the md21a manual

Thanks,
Gabriel

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

I'm running a pair of MD 21b's in a Marine Projects Project 31. The main difference I can see between these and the a's is the different types of heat exchanger. Mine has the brass cylindrical one, whereas the other engine has the boxy heat exchanger, although I am sure there are other differences.

One of my heat exchangers is currently leaking and displacing coolant into the bilges. I've had it off the boat and pressure tested and may of the tubes are leaking so I am in the market for another if anyone has one or can point me in the right direction.

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

A what is it question.

In the raw water line, between the reverse gear oil cooler and the engine oil cooler, mounted above the starter and just aft of the oil filter, there is a round Pot about 5" diameter that looks like some kind of diaphragm. It is hooked up by rubber hoses and flexible on it's mount. It is not shown in my manual.

What is it, can they be fixed, and are replacements available if not?
Because it is not shown in the manual, can it be eliminated if not fixable?

While changing oil, I wiggled it and it leaks from the bottom of the pot when wiggled. Doesn't leak unless wiggled, and it is not the connecting hose.

Thanks

I have stern drives on my boat so I don't have a reverse gear oil cooler but what you are describing sounds like a raw water strainer. Mine's mounted on the bulkhead before the oil cooler and the basket needs to be taken out from time to time to declog the gunge that accumulates there. There's a sealing ring which fits beneath the cap and if it has become brittle or torn it should be replaced or air will get into your system.

OK, maybe. This is past the primary raw water strainer, between two parts of the oil cooling. Is it common to find a secondary strainer at such a location?

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

You were right, Taff. Got it off and problem turned out to be simple clean and tighten up. I could not see how it clamped between the two cooler units without pulling it off, but with your reply knew it would be idiot simple. Never saw anything clamped by heavy steel dual hose mounting bracket with no other hose clamps. Thanks.

Glad to be of assistance Vino. It's very odd to have two of them but then again few boats have two oil coolers.

steve what i know in mexico about volvo diesels--- only one repair guy i know of, in banderas bay(rotten robbie)--he has trouble getting parts. so, make sure you can access parts independently. it also takes forever to get them to mexico.
glad about the peugeot thing--- those are some sturdy engines--i blew one up err froze it.... was a lot of work to do that. (dont ask. the car was a righteous pos. engine was iffy and electrics were shambles. was old and abused and lasted me 2 years, so i think poogoats rock.)

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

Thanks for the heads up Zee. Mine is in pretty good shape, being a newly rebuilt when I bought the boat, but spares for all kind of stuff is just common sense, particularly when knowing will be going to a place where they are hard to get. Will stock up on all most likely to wear out parts... water stuff, impellers, anodes, gasket material, sealants, probably a spare injector or two, glow plugs, glow plug resistors... +++

Has anybody compiled a general "diesel spares list" for remote destination sailors?

Re: Anyone have knowledge or experience with Volvo MD21A or MD21B to share?

injectors and injector pumps in casamira castillo. 70miles out of barra. excellent master of rebuilding pumps and injectors. best friends with my mechanic, diaz, and the best electrician in mexico, living in cihuatlan, chebio. that is hte magic trio in mexico.
chebio and diaz were 30 yrs together as friends working shrimpers. not pangas, shrimpers.
these guys are excellent masters of their craft, and very reasonably priced if not dirt cheap.
there is a rebuilder of heat exchangers also in the mountains near javier the pump guy.

as for reasonable spares list-- whatever it is you donot have will break, so go from there.
