Assistant needed Yanmar engine noise

We are getting a noise from the engine compartment when the engine is switched off. It sounds like a fan. Does anyone have ideas as to why this might happen and what she should do? THANK YOU! (We are sailing in Sardinia now, and are quite a ways from our base)

Have you tried locating the “fan”?

If sailing and engine off the noise is the prop turning the transmission just from boat movement through the water. Some folks leave the transmission in reverse while sailing but Yanmar doesn't recommend this as the force works the play between the gear teeth and causes premature ware. Hope this helps.

Is there a separate switch for the engine air exhaust fan? Maybe it's on? We have one that operates automatically when engine running but has manual override for generator use...

Re: Assistant needed Yanmar engine noise

In modern Yanmar installations, the compartment fan switch is always separate from the start/stop switches. It sounds like the fan is still on even though the engine is off.

Is you Yanmar panel still lit? Does it have the engine hours lcd displayed? Then the panel is on, and so is the compartment fan. If so, turn off the panel by holding the power button (not the stop button) for a few seconds until the lcd turns off.

Re: Assistant needed Yanmar engine noise

My Beneteau 40.7 has an engine compartment fan located on the stern bulkhead. I am under the impression that many Beneteaus do. This fan is controlled by the power switch on the engine panel and will run when the engine is stopped with the fuel cuttoff.
