BCM Captain?????

I am thinking I am going to finish the project I started. The MD2 in the boat is seized, and I have a chance to buy a cheap BCM captain 4cyl.
I know the motor is older, but works well.(i am told) I ave not heard much about these motors and wondering if anyone has had one, or what there reputations are?
Thanks for any info.

Re: BCM Captain?????

Think you might be in for trouble with BMC . I believe that is British Marine Corp which is one the UK government's unsuccessful forays into the diesel business after taking over Leyland?? or another Brit manufacturer. Now out of business. I had a Westerbeke 50 which had a BMC block and innards and internal overhaul parts were impossible to find even at Westerbeke prices. Nothing really wrong with the engine except very limited parts availability. Someone on this list must know more.......

You will note that the workshop manual is "currently out of stock". Which is exactly where the oil pump and numerous other parts for overhaul of these engines have been since at least 2007. THere are a number of lWesterbeke 50 take outs lying around for parts as this engine was popular in US sailboats in the late 70's and early 80's . The basic diesel engine was fine, the marinization by Westerbeke was a Rube Goldberg arrangement apparently done by a committee that did not talk to one another.

Re: BCM Captain?????

You can still get parts for them in Great Britain, unfortunately they are now manufactured in India, if you have any more difficulty contact me and I will help

Re: BCM Captain?????

I missed the earlier reference to Leyland engines, the original Leyland engines, were bought in vast quantities(and later copied by, DAF). Parts are readily available and if anyone has any problems I can put you in touch with several distributors, or the manufacturer of the engines now being built under licence. Incidentally many hire boat company's in Great Britain & Europe still operate may of these BMC engines over 30 yrs old, so there should be no problem with parts to renovate your old genny's.
I hope this is helpful to you.
