Best Alternative Raw Water Strainer

In the market for a raw water strainer.
Perkins 4.107 with 1" inlet hose.
I like the Groco large strainer with large holes in the screen, but not the $300+ price tag.
Has anyone used an off the shelf residential or other less expensive / DIY strainer?
Currently leaning towards Shurflo 1 1/4" ~$65

Thanks

Re: Best Alternative Raw Water Strainer

I have this one on my Catalina 375 with a Yanmar 3JH4E 40 HP engine.
The top is clear and you can run a hose into the top when the sea cock is closed for a fresh water rinse of the engine then pour antifreeze into it for the winter.

Forespar, Marelon 1-1/2" Raw Water Strainer, MF810 its about $150 depending where you get it.

Let me know what you choose.

Re: Best Alternative Raw Water Strainer

A below the waterline strainer doesn't seem like a great place to economize - especially when there's a great time-tested product like the Groco.

Those Shurflo strainers are not really meant as engine strainers. Will clog much sooner due to the limited filter area.

While I dislike plastic strainers below the waterline, my current boat has a Vetus. It's downside (other than being made of plastic) is that the strainer basket is harder to clean than a Groco. I swear at it every time I clean it and am considering switching to a Groco.

Assuming your location of Berkeley CA is accurate, you may want to try Blue Pelican marine consignment in Grand Marina, Alameda. I picked up a decent 1" Groco bronze sea strainer there a couple years ago. If I remember, was around $60 and had nipples still on it.

Dang that's true about Blue Pelican. I settled on the Vetus FTR330 new from Defender and am very satisfied. Well built and thought out and the basket is durable polyehtylene. I plan to coat the threads and o-ring with super lube. Total with shipping $133.
