Beta Marine Custom Exhaust Riser

I am in process installing a new Beta Marine 14 into my cape dory 27, and have realized that there is not a sufficient drop from the injection point in mixing elbow to the waterlift muffler. I am going to need to build a larger dry exhaust loop to ensure there will not be any flooding of engine when we are heeled over.

Has anyone built a custom exhaust riser for the Beta? They sell a threaded exhaust flange so you can use galvanized pipe to build the loop, but trying to figure out how to get after market injection piece for system, or how to build one. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Re: Beta Marine Custom Exhaust Riser

Beta offers high rise exhaust elbows made of welded 316 stainless steel pipe, in 6" and 8" height.

If required, they also offer short sections of this pipe that can be used to raise the standard high rise elbow. Just cut the riser mid way, weld in a few inches and re-wrap with fiberglass lagging. This makes it very easy to customize the Beta exhaust without resorting to iron plumbing pipe and aluminum riser bends.

If you add height to the standard high rise elbow, you must secure a brace back to the engine to eliminate excessive vibration.

For Cape Dory 27 installations, the off the shelf, 8" high rise elbow is normally adequate enough height and points the exhaust outlet towards the muffler which is on the stbd side of the shaft.

Call Beta USA directly 252-249-2473 and they will be happy to discuss your options.

Re: Beta Marine Custom Exhaust Riser

Thanks for posting - this is very helpful.

Any other pictures you could provide of the installation would be hugely helpful.

What is the clearance from the waterlift muffler to the injection elbow? Seems like there is a low spot then it goes up to the waterlift muffler in this picture

I am not sure what muffler was used. A Vetus NLP50 muffler would probably provide the required drop.

Re: Beta Marine Custom Exhaust Riser

I made a custom elbow for my Beta 50. I used their tall one as a base. Cut it in a few places welded a few lengths of stainless tubing and a few elbows to get the shape and height needed.

Any shop that does Marine welding should be able to make one for you. The stainless elbows are all standard sizes. It should not cost much to do it. Napa auto parts have lagging you can wrap it with.
