Blocked Air Filter

I'll make a long story short.

My Volvo Penta D2-55B quit this summer and boat had to be towed. Problem was an exhaust leak that saturated the K&N air filter.

With leak fixed and a cleaned air filter the engine runs well again but idles very roughly necessitating a higher idle speed, about 1,000 RPM vs the previous 850.

I'm thinking that the injectors need service. Opinions?

Blocked Air Filter

What caused the exhaust to leak so badly that it blocked the air cleaner? Could it be that the exhaust smoke and leak was a symptom and not the underlying problem?
Was the exhaust leak combined with cooling water or was it a dry leak before the water injection point?
An engine can handle breathing a fair bit of exhaust but too much will block the intake manifold, its a common problem with vehicle engines that have EGR…… possibly the worst strategy to save the planet ever introduced by the automotive industry.

Re: Blocked Air Filter

And a self fulfilling prophesy... the exhaust leak blocks the intake and the smoke intensifies, thus blocking the filter even more. Been there, done that on an 80 Mangusta. Should have had it towed. New exhaust was 20 grand. (needed it though so no foul) Cleaning turbos, intakes, and the ENTIRE boat was another 20! Do not try to run your boat with a serious exhaust leak; the side effects aren't worth it. Just my $.02. Oh, and don't forget the generator(s).
