Bukh DV24 crank removal

Hi all.

I'm trying to take the front cover off so I can check and replace the front bearing liner but not sure how to remove the big locking nut off the front.
Is this reverse thread?

I was assuming I could just tap the ring around but it doesn't seem to budge.
...

Any ideas?

Re: Bukh DV24 crank removal

This is the locking ring in question.

Also, with the front cover off, can I undo the bolts from the intermediate bearing and (with the pistons and rods out) slide the crank out the front without having to take the rear cover etc off? Or is there a locking ring on the rear of the crank as well?

Cheers
Hunt

Re: Bukh DV24 crank removal

The manual doesn't say, so normally one would assume it's not reverse thread.

The proper tool to remove it is called an 'SKF spanner'; the manual lists the size as either HN10 or HN12. There are many permutations; some are adjustable and not very expensive.

If you mess up the nut with a hammer and punch, you'll have to cut the old one off and replace it, not the end of the world put a royal PITA.

As for removing the crank, a look at the service and parts manual may answer your questions better, but it looks to me like there's a gear and similar special nut on the other end as well.
