This really sucks. You need to remove the toe rail. After that a really sweet way is to use a planer to get it flat and then do your lay-up.

Re: Cal cruising 46 year 1968 by bill lapworth. Reseal hull to deck joint

Hi,
Welcome aboard. I have had Cal Cruising 46, Hull # 3 for 31 years now. She was built for Jack Jensen, owner/founder of Cal Boats who sailed her around the world before passing in 1981 from a rare blood disease. We bought her from his estate 17 March 1982 and she has been the "Perfect" boat for us.

We have never had any hull to deck leaks nor any reason to consider re-sealing that joint. I would like to help you. How did you come to the conclusion that your hull to deck joint was leaking?

Once you start pulling fasteners you're going to open up a big can-O-worms!

If you have an aluminum toerail and SS fasteners you're going to find that electrolysis has done a nasty on your hull/deck joint. And unless you can reach all the fasteners there will be gaps that that will still leak. Stanchions are another famous place for leaks. Have you located the source of the leaks?

On my boat I had access to all the fasteners so I just pulled the toerail, replaced all the fasteners and glassed in a cap rail over the whole mess, Making the boat a one piece hull/deck.

Check out my blog and goto the 2011/December and the "Sealing Hull to Deck Joint" page. It was a lot of hard work but it'll never leak again! Or the stanchions either.

Hi tom

How nice to hear from you

I have been trying to reach you for a long time thru Gene Ulmer of Bayou Fl

And thru Facebook and various social media, no luck

And here you are?.... Just out of no where.

It may well be the stanchions, I have to look closely, I may be too hasty.....

My roll of paper towel that was stowed on a wall compartment beneath the dinette got mildew

So I thought perhaps I have a leak. I could be wrong.......

I also wanted a picture of your aft arch since I want to custom build one just like it for solar, satellite and wind generator

I saw a pix of your boat of google

I am also curious to see the type of modifications you did in the main saloon

Today I was trying to improve my deep bilge pump. It was kind of a Mickey Mouse

Bilge pump. I need a secondary more powerful one but none of the over 1500 GPH

Would fit in the deep bilge cuz the prop shaft is in the way

Thanks for your response
