Very true. My point was it's not necessary to add lubricity to old fuel. New fuel has the lubricity issue. I wonder how many are actually using a lubricity additive & which one.

Re: Can I still use old diesel fuel?

O,K here goes about fuel (diesel new) additives for older engines. This has been kicked around a lot in the past. I use a very small amount of 2 cycle (TCW) oil in my fuel. The engine is a fine running 39 year old Yanmar 2QM20. Does it help, who knows for sure however no fuel pump issues have occured. It lubricates, burns. and is smokeless. My volumes are very conservative like a capfull to a 20 liter top up.

Re: Can I still use old diesel fuel?

diesel is old made from rotted down dinosaurs and vegetation / that were all buried under clay, boulders, sand last time the earth went through a comet tail

yes uncontaminated clean diesel is o.k to use / there is an algae that lives in diesel /common name is fuel bug it changes the colour of the diesel to a darker slightly murky colour / can be treated with additives and filtered out / as a precaution most stink boat owners regularly treat their fuel.

half a gallon of diesel would cost more to treat than replace / if you are not allergic to diesel on your skin it's very good sandfly and mosquito repellent - best to wash it off before climbing into your silk sheets .

If you are unsure of your fuel, do the right thing. Put it in your neighbor's tank.

Scout , How old does the diesel fuel has to be ? 15 years ?
In Canada they sold low Sulfur fuel 15 years ago and ultra low
Sulfur about 5 years ago.
I use only Stanadyn Lubricity Formular in my Fuel and have recomended
it to my friends and customers for 15 years. It Works.
Cheers

That's a good question. I believe marinas are exempt from the ULSD requirement but I think it's all that's been available for a while now.

It has to help, small two stroke engines get their entire internal lubrication from the minor amount of oil mixed into the fuel and I know from experience that without it they will seize.

Re the action of sulphur in diesel fuel.

They put sulphur into alloys to improve their machinability so I suspect it may have anti-galling properties which were beneficial to the engines sliding components.
