Can you use mr. Gasket exhaust rated gasket paper for exhaust manifold, yanmar

Hey there. Have an older yanmar 2QM20, raw water cooled. OEM gaskets for this engine are priced as if they are infused with gold. Obviously any normal gaskets for cylinder head end plates, where you are just sealing against water can just be made with regular gasket paper. Is there any reason you can’t also use exhaust rated paper to make your own gaskets for the end plates on the exhaust manifold etc..?

I made similar gaskets for an old Universal from a composite metal/paper material, I think it was designed to make head gaskets. Got it from AutoZone as I recall. Hard to cut to shape but it worked fine.

I don't actually know what "exhaust rated paper" is but I just made up gaskets for a 2GM using metal reinforced gasket sheet from "Supercheap" (the Australian version of a NAPA store). it 's called double sided manifold sheet and quite difficult to work with because of the metal mesh core and probably a total waste of time since the manifold and mixer elbow are both water cooled and never get very hot under normal circumstances.
if you have the close coupled mixer elbow, the paper you suggested will probably be ok but if you have the uncooled extension between the manifold and mixer, use the reinforced stuff

Use reinforced gasket paper. High temp RTV might be an idea if used sparingly. There can be back pressure on the exhaust where you want a metal gasket or metal reinforced. You might be able to source a gasket through Felpro or NAPA. Can you use Mr. Gasket #77 or similar? Sure. Should work fine. #5960 would be even better as it is metal reinforced. A gasket punch set helps or a cheap wood chisel works for cutting the 5960. Trauma shears work OK on it too.

A trick with metal reinforced gasket making is to clamp the blank gasket between two boards or plastic and drill your (4) 8mm holes. Then cut the water passage holes and the center exhaust hole with either shears or on a flat block of wood or rubber with a gasket punch or chisel you don't mind getting dull fast. You can transfer the gasket impression onto the paper by putting a light coat of oil on the manifold or the end plate and pressing that onto clean gasket paper. Then trace with a pen or felt marker. Have fun.
