Carl Hurth Munchen Gearbox

Looking for info on this gearbox/transmission..
I cannot find any info on the web that correlates to those numbers on the tag. Called trans Atlantic Diesel, they never heard on HBW 18-3R. Its attached to a perkins 4-108m . Unit came out of Formosa 41

Thank you

When I looked at the picture of the plate on the gearbox, I noticed the "Munchen". It has a double dot over the "u", and the dot is called an umlaut. It is "Munich", only in German. So, now we can see that the tranny says Karl Hurth, and Munich.

HBW 18 3 R
9 20
NR 13-638

I'm sorry but the numbers are probably key here, as they've been stamped onto the plate. Just as a guess, the HBW one is something to do with a model number, and the NR 13-638 a serial number. That's as far as my WAG's can take this. There's a possibility that the HBW and NR stand for something German, and any German speaking person could tell you more than i can.

However, someone who is more familiar with them should come along soon, to help.

Good luck with it.

Ann

Re: Carl Hurth Munchen Gearbox

"NR" is abbreviation for "Number", probably a serial

Re: Carl Hurth Munchen Gearbox

The HBW series were numbered 10/15/20 for a while, then became 100/150/200 for the same models (and then became the ZF 10/15/20 again). The three digit models were approximately the torque capacity at the lowest gear ratio. So an HBW 150 (and an HBW 15) had a torque capability of 150Nm (at ~1.5:1).

The -number was the closest whole number to the forward gear ratio. Depending on size there were -1.5, -2, -2.5, and -3 models. -3 represented gear ratios from 2.75:1 to 2.99:1, -2.5 = 2.25-2.74, etc.

At the higher gear ratios the torque rating was reduced. The 5/50-2 was rated at 50Nm while the 5/50-3 was rated at 35Nm. The only difference was the gear ratio.

Never seen an 18-3 (although found one for sale on eBay Germany 3 years ago). I would guess that an 18-3 was rated at 180Nm in the -2 (or -1.5 version). The -3 probably has a ratio around 2.9:1 and a rating of ~140Nm or so. That would make it suitable to ~60Hp, which is in line with the engine on which it was found.

The R at the end indicates right-hand.

Where was boat built? or rephrase, where was engine installed?
Try calling Volvo, particularly in upper Chesapeake bay. 410-275-1200. I think Ronda is owner. They deal with a good number of sailboat engines. You appear in Norfolk area, so that would not be to far away. just a thought.

I'm guessing that you have a Hurth Borg Warner 10-18-003R. If you can post a picture of the transmission we'll have a better chance of helping.

Oh my goodness Gordie May, what black art did you use to conjure up those manuals so quickly? Was it witchcraft or conjuring spells?

Re: Carl Hurth Munchen Gearbox

Here are a couple of manuals for the standard HBW that would help you settle it (sorry, both sites use HTTP so you'll have to be logged in for the links to work).

Re: Carl Hurth Munchen Gearbox

Thank you everyone for the replies and info. I'll look through the links. The engine and trans are being removed this week..so I'll have actual pics of it.

I bought the combo, 4-108 with this hurth trans.
I'm not going to use the trans, I have a 4-108/velvet-drive in my westsail32.
Just going to freshen and reseal this perkins over the next year or so. Build a new instrument panel, then swap it into my W32
My 4108 runs well, just leaks, all the hoses have unknown age on them....feel better freshening this one then swapping it...I can continue to swap out oil absorbs for a while...

Figuring I'll sell the hurth. It is a good unit. The ppl I bought engine/combo...just motored from RI to NC with it. They are upgrading to a Beta setup.
I met them at Great Bridge locks...checked everything over and helped them get underway...three days later they arrived in Oriental

Thanks again

Re: Carl Hurth Munchen Gearbox

Picked up engine trans today. Here are a few pic. I'm not going to use it. Its works 100% just not too sure what it's worth.
Guy at yard who pulled it said it was the only hurth he had ever seen with top mount shift lever.
Thanks
